Toledo Symphony to feature hit songs from 'Broadway's Best'

The Toledo Symphony, with conductor Chelsea Tipton II, will present a KeyBank Pops series concert, "Broadway's Best," featuring hits from Cats, Evita, Miss Saigon and more, at 8 p.m. Oct. 28 in the Stranahan Theater, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd. Tickets range from $22 to $60. Also, the Symphony and the Magic Circle Mime Company will present "Halloween Spooktacular" at 3 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle, 2445 Monroe St. Children are encouraged to come in costume and to join the musicians on stage for a parade. The University of Toledo Department of Music presents Mezzo-soprano Jane Katherine Atwood and pianist Emily Hardin in an evening of music including Handel's Rinaldo and Schumann's Frauenliebe und Leben at 8 p.m. Oct. 27 in Recital Hall of the Center for the Performing Arts, 2801 West Bancroft St. Also in Recital Hall, violinist Rico McNeela and pianist James Wilhemsen present "Mozart Complete Sonatas for Piano and Violin" at 7 p.m. Oct. 29. Vocalist Leah Martensen and pianist Sue Sobolewski will be in concert at 4 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Maumee Theatre, 601 Conant St., Maumee. The concert will feature songs from Martensen's Christian album "What I'm Not." Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at 419-321-5007 or at www.ticketmaster.com.

Assets Toledo is looking for dancers to compete in their fall fundraiser "Dancing Under the Stars" to be held at 6 p.m. at the Civic Center, in the categories of jazz, swing, ballroom, and latin. The contest is open to anyone with an entry fee of $120 per duo or $75 per individual before Oct. 27, after which a late fee will be applied. The winners will receive a trophy and monetary prize. A benefit recital of piano duets in celebration of Mozart's 250th anniversary, by Paul and Helen Baumgartner, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in St. Petri Lutheran Church, 3120 South Byrne Rd. Michael Gould and Iwasaki Chieko will perform modern and traditional Japanese works at 7 p.m. Monday in room 202B of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union in Bowling Green. Gould plays the Japanese bamboo flute and Iwasaki plays the traditional 13-stringed Japanese harp. Also, Bowling Green State University voice students will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Music from the Manor House, Wildwood Preserve, 5100 West Central Ave. Both performances are free.

The University Musical Society presents The Florestan Trio in a concert of Mozart, Saint-Saens, and Shostakovich at 8 p.m. today in Rackham Auditorium, 915 East Washington St., Ann Arbor. Tickets range from $18 to $38.

Also the Shostakovich Centennial Festival: Concerts 3-5, will take place at 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday and at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hill Auditorium, 825 North University Ave.

The concerts will feature the Kirov Orchestra of the Marinsky Theatre, the Men of the UMS Choral Union and the University of Michigan Glee Club in the all-Shostakovich program. All the performances will take place on the UM campus in Ann Arbor. Information: 734-764-2538.

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, under renowned conductor Sir Andrew Davis, presents a concert of works by Haydn, Strauss and Bernstein, as well as the theme from Stanley Kubrick's film 2001 a Space Odyssey, at 8 p.m. Oct. 26 and 27 and at 8:30 p.m. Oct. 28 in Orchestra Hall of the Max M. Fisher Music Center, 3711 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Tickets range from $19 to $69.
