Studdard to perform at benefit for hospital

Individual tickets to see former American Idol winner Ruben Studdard perform at a May 17 fund-raiser in the Toledo Riverfront Hotel (formerly the Wyndham Hotel) go on sale today.

Tickets are $75, and proceeds from the event that celebrates the 10th anniversary of WJUC-FM (107.3) will benefit Toledo Children's Hospital. Tickets can be purchased at WJUC's offices at 5902 Southwyck Blvd. The program, which starts at 6 p.m., includes dinner and a performance by Studdard, who won the American Idol contest in its second season.

Hip-hop icon Bow Wow has re-scheduled his visit, originally planned for tonight in the SeaGate Centre, 401 Jefferson Ave. The Prince of Fame Tour will now be at 7 p.m. May 26 in the center. The concert also includes sets from support acts Mims, Lloyd, Huey, and Crime Mob. Tickets already sold will be honored at the door. Claire's Day is to run from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 19 at the Maumee Branch Library, 501 River Rd., Maumee. The sixth annual event is a family community book festival created in honor and memory of Claire Lynsey Rubini (1990-2000), who loved reading and telling stories.

The day-long celebration includes 50-minute presentations by visiting authors and illustrators, including Mary Kay Carson, Chris Crutcher, Jaime Adoff, Shirley Neitzel, Anne Margaret Leis, Wendy Popko, Alan St. Jea, Wil Clay, and Paul Many. Lectures often include slide shows, drawing demonstrations, and audience participations. Storytellers, entertainment, and hands-on activities will take place outside the library in tented areas. A Mother's Day dinner theater, Inspirations of Elvis, is planned Sunday in the Zenobia Shrine, 1511 Madison Ave. The event stars Robert Rosencrantz as Elvis with the Imperials Quartet and the Roustabout Show Band. Harvest Theatre of Toledo will hold auditions for its September Shakespeare Festival at the Ottawa Park amphitheatre in West Toledo. Auditions for The Taming of the Shrew, directed by Jim Trumm, and The Tempest, directed by Bill Quinlan, will be held by appointment only from 7 to 10 p.m. May 17 and 2 to 6 p.m. May 19 in the Collingwood Arts Center, 2413 Collingwood Blvd. Auditioners are asked to prepared a monologue or soliloquy from any of Shakespeare's plays. The Waterville Playshop's annual summer workshop for children who have finished grades 2-8 will be held June 1-29 at the Monclova Community Center.
