'Stars' winding up its free series at the zoo

Music Under the Stars is winding up another season of free outdoor concerts in the amphitheater of Toledo Zoo. Sam Szor and the Toledo Concert Band will explore the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein in their final performance at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 26. Music from Carousel, Oklahoma, and other stage shows will be featured. Special guests will be juggler Jay Gilligan & Co., and Ballet Theatre of Toledo. Concerts are free to the public.

The Toledo Opera is holding chorus auditions for adults and children for its upcoming performance season. A children's chorus will perform in the first production, Carmen, in early November in the Valentine Theatre. Rehearsals begin Sept. 9 and continue Sunday and Wednesday evenings in the opera headquarters on the sixth floor of the Secor Building, 425 Jefferson Ave. Adults in all singing ranges and boys and girls age 8 to 12 (or their parents) may schedule individual tryouts through Renay Conlin, general and artistic director, at 419-255-7464.

The Lourdes College Chorus is seeking singers of all ages for its 50th anniversary season. The 40-voice group performs a diverse repertory and has sung in England, Hungary, and Canada. Director Karen Biscay is especially seeking altos, tenors, and baritones, although all voice types are welcome. Rehearsals are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays in the Franciscan Theatre & Conference Center, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania. Season highlights include a concert with the Ohio Air National Guard Band on Sept. 16, a showcase with the Bowling Green State University Collegiate Chorale on Oct. 14, and a performance with the Toledo Symphony on Nov. 28. Local dance companies are holding open houses in conjunction with registration for the fall term of classes.

•Toledo Ballet's open house will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 25 in the studio in Westfield Franklin Park, across from the cinema on the second level.

•Ballet Theatre of Toledo is accepting students for its fall term, to start the week of Sept. 6, at its headquarters, 1124 Corporate Dr., Holland. Registration deadline is Aug. 20.

•Fall classes began yesterday at Toledo Classical Ballet Academy, 4101 King Rd., Sylvania. Auditions for the academy's original production of Dracula, set for Oct. 19 and 20 in the Collingwood Arts Center, will be as follows: ages 6-9, 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday; ages 10-13, 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. Saturday and 1:45 to 3:15 p.m. Sunday; age 14 and older, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday. There will be a $10 audition fee.

The University Musical Society is to open ticket sales for the coming season on Monday at its box office in the University of Michigan League, Ann Arbor. Highlights of the season include the Shen Wei Dance Arts performances and the La Scala Opera House Orchestra with Riccardo Chailly. The UMS Web site, www.ums.org, has more information.
