Acrobat troupe alters date for Owens show

The performance of the Golden Dragon Acrobats, originally scheduled for 8 p.m. Sept. 15 in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts at Owens Community College, has been postponed until Feb. 13, 2008. Information: 567-661-2787.

Harvest Theatre of Toledo will host its first Summer Shakespeare production, The Taming of the Shrew, at 3 p.m. in the Glyn M. Smith Amphitheatre in Ottawa Park on Sept. 8, 9, 15, and 16. Director James Trumm has put a modern spin on this story by setting it in the 1950s. All performances are free. The amphitheater is off Kenwood Boulevard, near the nature center and the police substation.

Belles on Their Toes, a 1952 comedy, has been scheduled at 1 p.m. Sept. 6 in Super Cinemas, 1301 East Mall Dr., Holland, as the latest entry in National Amusements' Silver Screen Classics program. The sequel to Cheaper by the Dozen stars Myrna Loy, Jeanne Crain, Jeffrey Hunter, and Edward Arnold.

The price of $1 will buy viewers a ticket, popcorn, and a soft drink. The Silver Screen Classics program is geared toward senior citizens, but movie fans of all ages are welcome to attend.

The Toledo Jazz Orchestra returns at 8 p.m. Sept. 7 to the Franciscan Center Theatre & Conference Center of Lourdes College for the start of its 2007-08 Harold Jaffe Concert Series. Grammy-winning trumpeter Terence Blanchard will join the orchestra at the end of the evening. Blanchard recently composed the score for Spike Lee's When the Levee Broke, a documentary on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

The themes and dates for the rest of the season are: Oct. 20, Ol' Blue Eyes is Back Again: Music of Frank Sinatra featuring Keith Hoyt; Dec. 8, A Swing Era Salute to Veterans: Holiday Edition with a guest appearance by Johnny Knorr; Jan. 12, Ohio Treasure:Guitarist Dan Faehnle; March 1, S'Wonderful and De-Lovely!:Songs of George Gershwin and Cole Porter; and April 5, Back to Balboa:The Music of Stan Kenton.

All concerts begin at 8 p.m. in the center, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania. Tickets are $5 for students, $22 for TJS members, and $25 for nonmembers. Information: 419-824-3999.

Also at Lourdes will be comedian Adam Ace performing at 8 p.m. Sept. 14 in the student lounge of St. Francis Hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger from the box office, 419-824-3999, and at the door.

The AIDS Resource Center Ohio presents SRO Masquerage from 7 p.m. to midnight Sept. 8 in the Secor Building, 425 Jefferson Ave. Entertainment will be provided by Pat Lewandowski, Athens Wheeler, and Twila Starr. Veteran pianist Jim Gottron, a regular at the Toledo Club and clubs all over town, will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight Tuesday at Murphy's Place, 151 Water St. Cover is $4 at the door.

A grand opening party and car show is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Erie Street Chowder House, 237 South Erie St. Elvis impersonator Robert Rosencrantz and the Roustabout Show Band will perform.

The Toledo Repertoire Theater presents its Rep Education Programs which run Sept. 8 through Oct. 27 at Collingwood Presbyterian Church, 2108 Collingwood Blvd. Fall sessions run from 9 a.m. to noon for ages six-16. Cost is $100. Information from the Rep at 419-243-9277.

Waterville Playshop will hold auditions for Escanaba in the Moonlight by Jeff Daniels from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 9 at Zion Lutheran Church in Waterville. Needed are six men. Auditioners should come prepared with a 1 to 2 minute dialogue. Additional auditions will be held at the church from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 14 and noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 15.
