10/18/2007

Pianist and collaborator Sandra Rivers will join the Scandia Quartet for two faculty recitals: one at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Recital Hall of the University of Toledo Center for Performing Arts and one at 8 p.m. Monday in Herrick Chapel of Adrian College. Rivers has performed in North America, Europe, and Asia with Itzhak Perlman, Kathleen Battle, Anne Akiko Myers, Joshua Bell, Sarah Chang, and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, among others. She has appeared in the Mostly Mozart Festival, Tanglewood, and both the Kennedy and Lincoln centers.

A graduate of the Juilliard School in New York City, Rivers is on the faculty at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. That's where she met violinist Cecelia Johnson, founder of the Scandia Quartet and founder and director of Community Youth Motivated by Arts Learning, a nonprofit group for central city children at Toledo's Collingwood Presbyterian Church. Johnson also serves on the string faculty of Adrian College. Other quartet members are violinist Dana Mader, violist Alice Petersen, and cellist James Anderson.

On the program for both recitals will be Debussy's Danse, a one-movement work for string quartet, Grieg's Sonata for Violin and Piano, Op. 45, and the Brahms Piano Quintet, Op. 34.

Oberlin College's Conservatory of Music has launched a commercial record label carrying classical and jazz music performed by its own students and faculty. Conservatory dean David H. Stull says, "The Oberlin Music label provides us with an extraordinary opportunity to educate our students in topics associated with the music industry." Recordings are available on CD and on digital channels including Apple iTunes. Associate dean of technology and facilities Michael Lynn, the producer of Oberlin Music, believes that the timing is right for a new label. "The Conservatory generates so many concerts and produces so much material that it makes absolute sense to do a continuing label."
