Theater students get chance to show skills

1/31/2008

Student directors and actors are getting ready to strut their stuff at two regional universities.

The seventh annual Triage Theatre event takes place this weekend at the University of Findlay.

Designed to test students' mettle under pressure, Triage begins at 8 p.m. tomorrow when participants are given a theme. They then will have 24 hours to write, cast, rehearse, and perform a 5 to 10-minute play.

At 8 p.m. Saturday, an audience will watch each production and vote on the best one. The winner will get a cash prize, which is a portion of the ticket price for the performance.

This year's theme won't be announced until tomorrow, but past themes have included using Top 40 song lyrics as dialogue and showing what superheroes do when they're not saving the world.

The event is co-hosted by the University of Findlay theater program and Alpha Psi Omega, the university's honorary theater fraternity.

The Triage Theatre performance is scheduled at 8 p.m. Saturday in Grimm Theatre of the Egner Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Findlay. Tickets are $5 for the public, and free to UF employees and students with an ID card. Information: 419-434-5335.

At Ohio Northern University, a five-day run of student-directed one-act plays will open Wednesday.

Featuring works from American dramatists, the plays will be performed in the Stambaugh Studio Theatre.

Ohio Northern University presents a series of student-directed one-act plays at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Feb. 8, 2 and 8 p.m. Feb. 9, and 2 p.m. Feb. 10 in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students, and $9 for children. Information: 419-772-1900.
