Toledo Symphony to perform at University of Findlay
2/7/2008Japanese pianist Tomoko Kanamaru will appear as soloist with the Toledo Symphony at 4 p.m. Feb. 17 in Winebrenner Seminary at the University of Findlay. Kanamaru, who made her professional debut with an orchestra in Tokyo, is to perform Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. Chelsea Tipton II, resident conductor in his fifth season with the symphony, will lead the full ensemble through Beethoven's Egmont Overture and Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 ("Italian"). Mozart and More, the popular chamber series of the Toledo Symphony, will continue at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16 in the Franciscan Theatre & Conference Center of Lourdes College, 6832 Convent Blvd. Tipton will conduct Mozart's Symphony No. 31 ("Paris"), and Variaciones Concertantes by Ginastera, along with the Mendelssohn 4th. Israeli pianist Alon Goldstein will make his first northwest Ohio appearance at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15 in the Ritz Theater, 30 South Washington St., Tiffin. Goldstein graduated from the Rubin Academy of Music at Tel Aviv University and he studied with Leon Fleisher at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. Following graduation in 1997, he became a Performance Fellow at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Among orchestras he has performed with are the Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and San Francisco Symphony, European ensembles, and the Israel Philharmonic. The Junior and Mini Monday Musicales will present free public recitals at 2 p.m. (Junior) and 3:15 p.m. (Mini) on Feb. 17 in Epworth United Methodist Church, 3077 Valleyview Dr., off West Central Avenue. Junior members are high school students. Mini musicians are in grades 5-8.
Violinist Christian Tetzlaff will perform a recital of music by Bach, Ysaye, Bartok, and Paganini at 8 p.m. Feb. 14 in the University of Michigan's Hill Auditorium, 825 North University Ave., Ann Arbor. This is the German musician's first performance in Ann Arbor since 2000. Tickets are $10 to $50.
Also at the U of M is a performance at 8 p.m. Feb. 15 by NOISMO8, the only residential dance company in Japan. Choreographer Jo Kanamori is artistic director. The company will perform his NINA materialize sacrifice set to music by Vietnamese-French composer Ton That An. The performance will be in the Power Center, 911 North University, Ann Arbor. Tickets are $16 to $40.

Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings," a work choreographed by Kerri Wilde for Toledo Ballet and Toledo School for the Arts dancers, has been accepted for performance at the Ohio Dance Festival March 7-9 in Columbus. The performance will be at 7:30 p.m. March 8 in Sullivant Theatre at Ohio State University.
Heidelberg College, Tiffin, is accepting entries for its composition contest for piano music by composers age 16-22 who live in Ohio. The winning composition is to be performed at the Heidelberg New Music Festival April 11-13. Works can be for solo piano, piano four-hand, or two pianos, lasting three to five minutes. While CD recordings are not required, they are encouraged; electronic or fax submissions will not be considered. The deadline for submission is Feb. 15. Information: 419-448-2073.
