St. Patrick church to host choir
2/28/2008The Heidelberg College Choir will perform a free concert at 4 p.m. March 9 in the Historic Church of St. Patrick, 130 Avondale Ave. Grant Cook III will lead the group in works by Eberlin, Schutz, Schubert, Jennings, Lauridsen, Chilcott and Clausen. Also on the program are traditional settings of American hymns and spirituals. Established in 1938, the Tiffin-based choir has established a national reputation and has premiered works by American composers. In May the group will embark on its first European tour in 30 years, visiting Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, and Munich and Heidelberg, Germany. Information: 419-243-6452.
The Toledo Youth Orchestra will present a free chamber concert at 3 p.m. March 9 in Christ Presbyterian Church, 4225 West Sylvania Ave. Elizabeth Hamaker will conduct the group in works by Rossini, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. The orchestra comprises about 100 northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan students.
Israeli pianist Shai Wosner will make his local debut with the Toledo Symphony at 7:30 p.m. March 6 as part of the next Mozart and More Series performance in the Franciscan Theatre & Conference Center of Lourdes College, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania. Wosner is a winner of the 2005 Avery Fisher Career Grant, given to emerging performers. He recently was named a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist. Wosner is to perform Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major with the symphony. Coming to Toledo for a return visit is conductor Giordano Bellincampi, last heard here in a TSO performance of the Berlioz Te Deum in the 2005-2006 season. Bellincampi will be in residence in Toledo, as he also will be conducting the next Classics Series concerts and a Family Concert on March 14-16. Also on the Franciscan program will be the Richard Strauss Serenade for Winds and Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 5 in Bb Major. Resident conductor Chelsea Tipton II will lead the orchestra in a regional concert at 7:30 p.m. March 5 at Sauder Farm and Craft Village in Archbold. On the program are excerpts from Beethoven Symphony No. 5, Shostakovich's Bolt ballet, and Copland's "The Tender Land." Also scheduled is music by Milhaud, Saint-Saens, John Williams, and Custer's salute to big bands. Monday Musicale will present a free recital at 1 p.m. Monday in Epworth United Methodist Church, 3077 Valleyview Dr. Performers will be soprano Judy Pearson, pianist Barbara Harris, trumpeter Alizabeth Nowland, and pianist Irina Arbatskaya.
Classical pianist-composer Robin Spielberg will perform at 7 p.m. March 6 in Schomburg Auditorium of Defiance College at as part of the Schomburg Series. (This is a change from the originally scheduled date of March 11.) Spielberg, a Steinway Artist and spokesperson for music therapy, made her Carnegie Hall debut in 1997 and has built a performing career across the U.S. and in Asia. She has made 14 recordings of her own music on her own Mountain Music label and has won the ASCAP Popular Music Award. Tickets are $10 at the door.
The University Musical Society presents the Orion String Quartet with clarinetist David Krakauer in a recital at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the University of Michigan's Rackham Auditorium, 915 East Washington St., Ann Arbor. On the program is a new work by American composer David Del Tredici, "Magyar Madness," for clarinet and strings. Also scheduled are works by Haydn (String Quartet in C Major, Op. 74, No. 1) and Beethoven's Quartet No. 9 in C Major. Krakauer and the Orion also will perform K'vakaraat for Clarinet and Strings by Golijov. Tickets are $20 to $44 at www.ums.org.
The Toledo Classical Ballet Academy has moved from its first studio in Sylvania to a new headquarters at 7343 International Dr., Holland. Auditions for the company's spring production, Swan Lake, are to be held from 1 to 3:45 p.m. Sunday in the new studios. Information: 419-972-8684.
Company dancer Rebecca Paul won a regional ballet contest in Chicago and will continue to the next level at the Youth America Grand Prix in New York City in April.
