BGSU Philharmonia to perform
4/10/2008The Bowling Green State University Philharmonia, directed by Emily Freeman Brown, will be joined by the Toledo Symphony for a Side-by-Side concert at 3 p.m. April 20 in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center at Bowling Green State University. Brown will conduct Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe, Suite No. 2, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 with the combined orchestras. She also will lead the combined string sections of both groups in Mahler's Adagietto. The Philharmonia will be joined by the University Choral Society for Dvorak's Te Deum, Brown also conducting. BGSU soloists for the Dvorak include Jane Schoonmaker Rodgers and Kelly Anderson. Tickets are $7 to $10 in advance and $10 to $13 at the door.
Other events in Kobacker Hall include:
•World Percussion Night featuring three campus groups in a concert at 8 p.m. April 17. On the program will be the Afro-Caribbean Drum Ensemble directed by Steven Cornelius, the Kusuma Gari Gamelan directed by David Harnish, and the Hayabusa Taiko Ensemble, directed by Paul Yoon.
•The BGSU A Cappella Choir and Women's chorus, both directed by Sandra Frey Stegman, and the Choral Society, led by Mark Munson, will present a concert at 8 p.m. April 19. Tickets are $7 to $10 in advance and $10 to $13 at the door.
•The BGSU Steel Drum Ensemble led by Bryan Stanbridge will perform at 8 p.m. Monday and the University Men's Chorus, directed by William Skoog, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $7 to $10 in advance and $10 to $13 at the door.

The final concert in the Toledo Symphony Blade Chamber Series will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Toledo Club. On the program will be Hindemith's Trumpet Sonata with principal trumpet Lauraine Carpenter and pianist Valrie Kantorski, and Schumann's Piano Quintet with Kantorski, Kirk Toth, Naomi Guy, Valentin Ragusitu, and Martha Reikow. Closing the program will be Paul Moravec's Tempest Fantasy for Clarinet and String Trio with Georg Klaas, Merwin Siu, Robert Clemens, and Stefan Kasch. Tickets are $25 to $35.
The symphony will perform a regional concert at 7:30 p.m. April 19 in Clyde High School, 1015 Race St., Clyde, Ohio. Resident conductor Chelsea Tipton II will lead the group in a program of light classics and film score hits.

Collaboration, a new vocal music ensemble led by Mark Hetrick, will make its debut at 3 p.m. Sunday in McCord Road Christian Church, Sylvania. The 11-voice group will sing a cappella works ranging from classical and folk to jazz, show tunes, and pop music. A free will offering will be taken and there will be refreshments.
Mark your calendars: the final Metropolitan Live production of this season, La Fille du Regiment by Gaetano Donizetti, is to begin at 1:30 p.m. April 27 in Maumee's Cinema Deluxe, 1360 Conant St., Maumee. Tickets are $20, and there will be a taped encore performance at 3 p.m. April 28.
Former Toledoan David Hattner has been named the new conductor and music director of the Youth Philharmonic in Portland, Ore. Hattner, a clarinetist who recently performed in Toledo, will be the fifth leader of the 84-year old orchestra. He was chosen from an international pool of 112 candidates by a Portland search committee.
"David is ideal for the PYP. He creates the musical and social environment in which young musicians can and want to do their best," said Murry Sidlin, former resident conductor of the Oregon Symphony, who has worked with Hattner at the Aspen Music Festival and the Cascade Festival of Music. Hattner replaces Mei-Ann Chen, who has accepted a conducting fellowship at the Atlanta Symphony.
Established in 1924, the PYP is America's first established youth orchestra. In his new role, Hattner will be responsible for artistic and educational direction of the entire PYP association, which includes planning, preparing, and conducting season concerts and children's concerts, supervising staff conductors, outreach work in the schools, and auditioning applicants and members.
