SonoNovo concert series opens
10/9/2008Curious Concertos, a program of music by Mozart, Telemann, and Brixi set for 7 p.m. Oct. 17 will launch the 2008-2009 SonoNovo Chamber Ensemble Series at Trinity Episcopal Church, Adams at St. Clair streets downtown.
Trinity's resident ensemble will accompany flutist Katie Thompson and harpist Julie Buzzelli in Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp, and violist Susan Schrieber in Telemann's Concerto for Viola in G. Organist Brian Rotz will perform the Brixi Concerto with the ensemble to round out the program.
Tickets are $12-$15 at the door.
Subsequent concerts in the series will include Music for Piano and Strings with Wayne Anthony, Cecilia Johnson, and Jim Anderson on Jan. 23; Music of Samuel Barber, with soprano Courtney Altenberg and bass Charles Kiskaddon joining the ensemble, Feb. 27, and Music of Aaron Copland, with dancers from Ballet Theatre of Toledo performing with the ensemble, June 5 and 6.

Gunther Herbig will lead the Toledo Symphony in works by Tchaikovsky, Takemitsu, and Martin in Classics II concerts at 8 p.m. Oct. 17 and 18 in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 "Pathetique," and Martin's Concerto for Seven Winds, Percussion, and Strings have been performed by the TSO in earlier decades. The Takemitsu work, Requiem, is a Toledo premiere.

Recitals marking the start of the International Year of the Organ are set for mid-October in the region. The Toledo Chapter, American Guild of Organists will present "Pipes Spectacular" at 4 p.m. Oct. 19 at Maumee Presbyterian Church, 200 East Broadway, Maumee. Top local organists will perform traditional and contemporary sacred and secular music in this free public program, one of hundreds being presented across the country. The Fayette Opera House will be the venue for the first Glasgow Organ Series program with guest keyboardist Gregory Ceurvorst from Chicagoland performing at 3 p.m. Oct. 19.

The Toledo Area Theatre Organ Society will present Cleveland artist Donnie Rankin in performance at 3 p.m. this Sunday on the Marr & Colton theater pipe organ in the Ohio Theatre, Lagrange Street at Central Avenue. The North American Ballet will present its production of Dracula on two consecutive weekends this month. Guest soloists will include Anna Ivanova and Christopher Fellows. Musical events sponsored by Bowling Green State University include Music from Bowling Green at the Manor House at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Wildwood Preserve Metropark. Flutist Katie Jones and harpist Julie Buzzelli will perform music by Mozart and Gluck at this free public recital.
The BGSU Young People's Concert Series will begin with "Violapalooza," an 11 a.m. event Oct. 18 in Bryan Recital Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center. Tickets are $1-$2.
Jazz guitarist Martin Taylor will perform in a free public concert at 3 p.m. Oct. 19 in Bryan Hall. Taylor, a guest performer, has recorded over 100 albums and is a Grammy nominee.
The University Musical Society will present a new interpretation of Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring by Compagnie Heddy Maalem. Founded by Maalem, an Algerian dancer and choreographer, the company comprises dancers from Mali, Benin, Nigeria, and Senegal. The production can be seen at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Power Center, 121 Fletcher St., Ann Arbor. Tickets are $16-$38.
Also coming to the University of Michigan is the Soweto Gospel Choir in concert at 8 p.m. Oct. 17 in Hill Auditorium. Tickets are $10-$40.
