Mussorgsky's 'Pictures' on symphony schedule
11/13/2008The Toledo Symphony and Stefan Sanderling will perform Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition," the Ashkenazy arrangement, at 8 p.m. Nov. 21 and 22 in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle. Performing on the symphony's new Orser Steinway, pianist Kirill Gerstein will join the orchestra for a performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concert No. 3. Also on the program will be the local premiere of "Lux Perpetua," a work by Samuel Adler. Organist S. Wayne Foster, who performed the work in its 1997 premiere with the Dallas Symphony, will join the orchestra.
Excerpts from the Mussorgsky and the Rachmaninoff will be on the program for the Mercy Health Partners Family Concert at 3 p.m. Nov. 23 in the Peristyle. Gerstein will perform. The symphony, Sanderling, and Gerstein also will perform the Mussorgsky and movements from the Rachmaninoff at 8 p.m. Nov. 20 in Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 2955 Dorr St. Tickets: 419-531-4992.
The Moody Flutes Flute Choir will perform for the Music and Dessert Series at 6 p.m. Nov. 21 in the Sylvania Senior Center, 7140 Sylvania Ave., Sylvania. The program will include baroque, classical, and 20th-century music. Members Terri Potter, Virginia Dickey, Cathy Zapiecki, Carol Pack, Dottie Pienta, Bonnie Ward, Christy McConnell, and Connie Alleshouse perform on piccolo, C flutes, and alto and bass flutes. A group sing-along of Gershwin songs will be led by Pienta, with Alleshouse accompanying. Tickets are $2. Information: 419-885-3913.
Events at the University of Toledo include a free performance by pianist Logan Skelton at 3 p.m. Nov. 23 in the Recital Hall of the Center for Performing Arts. Skelton is on the faculty at the University of Michigan school of music, theatre, and dance. The concert is the second in the Dorothy MacKenzie Price Piano Series. Skelton will conduct a master class at the center from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 22.
Also on Nov. 23, the UT Collegium Musicum will perform a free concert at 8 p.m. in the Recital Hall.
A new Metropolitan Opera production of Berlioz's Le Damnation de Faust by Robert Lepage, conducted by James Levine with cast including Marcello Giordani, Susan Graham, and John Relyea, is to be presented in the Met's Live in HD series at 1 p.m. Nov. 22 in Maumee Cinema De Lux, 1360 Conant Street, Maumee. Tickets are $20 to $22 at the door.
The Children's Choir of Northwest Ohio will present a free concert titled We Love This . . . We Love That at 7 p.m. Nov. 23 in the Community of Christ Lutheran Church, Dutch and Finzel roads, Whitehouse. The choir comprises 33 4th-6th-grade singers from area schools and is led by Lisa Alleman.
The University of Findlay Concert Chorale, led by Micheal Anders, will present When Icicles Hang: Choral Music of John Rutter at 3 p.m. Nov. 23 in Winebrenner Theological Seminary on the Findlay campus. On the program will be Rutter's Magnificat and "When Icicles Hang." Soloists will be Nicole Ickes, Holly Butler, and Kirt Schnipke. A 34-piece orchestra will accompany the chorale, with Sharon Vass at the keyboard. Tickets are free at the UF box office, 419-434-5335, and at the door.
The Collingwood Arts Center will present the Tzigane Trio from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Nelson Theatre, 2413 Collingwood Blvd. Featured will be clarinetist Eric Anderson, cellist Sasha Anemone, and pianist Laura Brumbaugh performing works by Beethoven and Brahms.
