Library offers lunch-time shows

Toledo-Lucas County Public Library will launch its lunchtime Holiday Concert Series at 12:30 p.m. Monday in the Wintergarden of the Main Library, 325 Michigan St. All of the hourlong performances are free. Scheduled are Jelise & Co., Monday; Sylvania Northview High School musicians, Tuesday; Toledo Symphony string quartet, Wednesday; Moody Flutes, Dec. 11; Ottawa Hills High School, Dec. 12; St. Ursula Academy concert choir, Dec. 15; Toledo Symphony harp-flute duo, Dec. 16; Flarp flute-harp duo, Dec. 17; pianist John Cleveland, Dec. 18, and Scandia String Quartet, Dec. 19.

The Toledo Ballet will present its 68th production of The Nutcracker at 2 and 7 p.m. Dec. 13 and 2 p.m. Dec. 14 in the Stranahan Theater, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd. Choreographed by Gen Horiuchi and staged by Lisa Mayer, the production will feature guest artists Mary Carmen Catoya and Renato Penteado from the Miami City Ballet. Bedford/Sylvania Dance Academy will present The Nutcracker at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 12 in the Franciscan Theatre & Conference Center of Lourdes College, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania. Tickets are $20 at the door.

The Clarence Smith Community Chorus will perform its free Community Christmas Concert at 6 p.m. Dec. 14 in Christian Community Church, 2500 Nebraska Ave. Information: 419-534-3370 or cscchorus.com.

Toledo Symphony neighborhood and regional concerts continue with holiday programs planned for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 11 in St. Patrick Church, 610 South Portland St., Bryan; 7 p.m. Dec. 12 in Westgate Chapel, 2500 Wilford Dr., Sylvania, and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 14 in Epiphany Lutheran Church, 915 South Reynolds Rd. Resident conductor Chelsea Tipton II will conduct all performances. Recorder artist Don Jackson will appear at the Dec. 14 concert.

Lourdes College choirs will present Christmas Cheer - Good News! Carols, Canticles, and Christmas Favorites, at 3 p.m. Dec. 14 in St. Hedwig Church, 2916 Lagrange St. Director Karen Biscay will lead the choruses with accompaniment by Allison Ringold. A special feature of the program will be a Polish Heritage finale. The concert is part of an ongoing fund-raiser to help restore the pipe organ at the church. Holiday concerts help wrap up the fall quarter and mark the holidays at the University of Toledo. The UT symphonic band and wind ensemble will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Doermann Theatre of University Hall. The men's and women's choirs will sing out for the holidays at a free concert at 3 p.m. Dec. 14 in Doermann Theatre. TUBAChristmas, a special musical celebration of the holiday, will be presented at 8 p.m. Dec. 14 in the Recital Hall of the UT Center for Performing Arts. Jazz singer and faculty member Jon Hendricks will join UT music groups for Jazz Holiday Spectacular at 8 p.m. Monday in Doermann Theatre of University Hall. Tickets are $3 to $5 at the door.

Leonard Slatkin will launch his tenure as music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra with performances of Carmina Burana plus works by Giuseppi Verdi and James Lee III Dec. 11-14 in Orchestra Hall of the Max Fisher Center, 3711 Woodward Ave., Detroit. The University Musical Society, the Ann Arbor Youth Chorale, and soloists Hugh Russell, Mary Wilson, and Robert Baker will appear with the DSO. Perrysburg's Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Chorale will present its annual Holiday Celebration at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 13 in St. Rose Church, 215 East Front St., Perrysburg. Barbara Specht will conduct the orchestra in works by Boyce, Vaughan Williams, Anderson, and Handel. Wayne Anthony and Lisa Alleman lead the the PSO Chorale. A gala Christmas theater pipe organ concert followed by a classic movie will be presented by the Lyric Photoplay Society of the Collingwood Arts Center at 2 p.m. Dec. 14 in the historic center, 2413 Collingwood Blvd. Special guest organist will be Emily Seward, 13, from Southfield, Mich. The 1946 movie, Angel on My Shoulder, starring Claude Rains, Anne Baxter, and Paul Muni will be screened following the recital, with selected short films. Bowling Green State University will hold preliminary auditions for undergraduates in its 42nd annual music performance competitions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 11. Graduate auditions are set for 2:30 to 5 p.m. Dec. 11 and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 12. Final rounds for both levels will begin at 10 a.m. Dec. 13. All events are in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center. Competition winners will perform in a Winners Gala at 3 p.m. Dec. 14 in Kobacker. Both events are free.

Vocal conductor Mark Munson will lead Opus 181, a 12-voice chamber chorus of BGSU alumni, faculty, and staff, in a concert titled "Run with Torches: A Celebration of Christmas in Song," at 3 p.m. Dec. 14 in St. Aloysius Church, 150 South Enterprise St., Bowling Green. The concert is free to the public.
