Brass quintet to perform tonight at Owens
1/15/2009The Gaudete Brass Quintet will perform a blend of classical music and contemporary sound in concert at 7:30 tonight in the Owens Community College Center for Fine and Performing Arts, on Oregon Road in Perrysburg Township. Artists-in-Residence at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis., the group has been featured on a number of prominent concert series. Tickets are $5 for the public, from the box office or www.owens.edu. Tom Trenney, director of music ministries at First Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Mich., will present an organ concert at 7 p.m. Jan. 23 in Monroe Street United Methodist Church, 3613 Monroe St. Winner of the American Guild of Organists' 2006 national improvisation competition, Trenney will present a program of works by Charles Ives, Johann Sebastian Bach, Maurice Durufl, and Calvin Hampton, as well as an accompaniment to One Week, a silent film by Buster Keaton. The Toledo Symphony Orchestra will perform at 8 p.m. Jan. 23 at the University of Findlay's Winebrenner Theological Seminary. Chelsea Tipton II will conduct the orchestra in a concert featuring pianist Michael Chertock, who recently made his Carnegie Hall debut in a recital with clarinetist Ricardo Morales. The symphony's Mozart and More series continues at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24 in the Franciscan Theatre & Conference Center of Lourdes College, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania. Stephen Prutsman will perform Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 and conduct the symphony in works by Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach and Franz Schubert. Tickets are $29 and $33, with $5 student rush tickets at the door only.
With the help of symphony violinists Kirk Toth and Merwin Siu, violist Valentin Ragusitu, and cellist Martha Reikow, Prutsman also will perform his jazzy score to Buster Keaton's silent movie Sherlock, Jr. The movie and performance will be at 3 p.m. Jan. 25 in the Maumee Indoor Theater, 601 Conant St., Maumee. Two free concerts have been scheduled as part of the Bowling Green State University Faculty Artist Series. At 3 p.m. Jan. 25, Robert Satterlee will perform piano works by Wolfgang Mozart and Franz Liszt. At 8 p.m. Jan. 28, violist Megan Fergusson and pianist Thomas Rosenkranz will perform works by Paul Hindemith, Robert Schumann, and Serge Prokofiev. Both concerts are in Bryan Recital Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center.
Oboe and bassoon students of BGSU faculty members Jacqueline Leclair and Nathaniel Zeisler will be featured in Music from Bowling Green at the Manor House. The free recital is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 27 in Wildwood Preserve Metropark, 5100 West Central Ave.
Vocalists and musicians are being sought for the Christian Festival Choir and Orchestra, which is preparing for its EXALTATION 2009 concert, to be held on March 14 and 22. The State Ballet Theater of Russia presents Cinderella at 7:30

Pianist Robert Goode will present a program of works by J.S. Bach and Frederic Chopin at 4 p.m. Jan. 25 in the University of Michigan's Hill Auditorium, 825 North University Ave., Ann Arbor. Tickets range from $10 to $56.
Also at the university, Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and Syrian/Armenian painter Kevork Mourad will be featured in Gilgamesh. The multimedia presentation based on the ancient epic is scheduled at 7 and 9 p.m. Jan. 23 and 24 in the auditorium of the Biomedical Science Research Building, 109 Zina Pitcher Place, Ann Arbor. The Ann Arbor Symphony will celebrate Mozart's birthday with a concert presentation of The Magic Flute at 8 p.m. Jan. 24 in the Michigan Theater, 683 East Liberty St., Ann Arbor. Arie Lipsky will conduct the orchestra, with vocalists Rebekah Nye, Stephen West, Alice Pierce, John Shuffle, Jennifer Larson, and Matthew Garrett, and Stephen Whiting as the narrator. The deadline is looming for the eastern regional auditions for the Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition for Young Opera Singers. Applications must be postmarked by Wednesday for auditions in New York City in mid-February.
The competition is available to sopranos and mezzo-sopranos between the ages of 21 and 33 and tenors, baritones, and basses ages 21 to 35 who reside in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
