Toledo Opera season opens with Verdi's 'Falstaff'
5/21/2009The Toledo Opera has announced its 2009-10 season, opening with Giuseppe Verdi's Falstaff, featuring William Shakespeare's roguish character, on Nov. 7, 13, and 15 in the Valentine Theatre, 400 North Superior St. The production will be sung in Italian with projected English translations. April in Paris is the theme for Opera Gala 2010. The evening of choruses and arias from famous French operas will begin at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13 in the Peristyle of the Toledo Museum of Art. Also in the Peristyle will be Benjamin Britten's haunting Lucretia on March 13 and 14. The season comes to an end with Gaetano Donizetti's comic opera L'Elisir D'Amore on May 1 and 7 in the Valentine. Renay Conlin is Toledo Opera's general and artistic director.

Chamber Music Toledo ends its season at 3 p.m. May 31 with a performance of the Toledo Clarinets in the Maumee Indoor Theater, 601 Conant St., Maumee. Georg Klaas, Jocelyn Langworthy, Shannon Ford, and Kevin Schempf will perform Jerome Moross' Sonata for Clarinet Quintet, William Grant Still's Lyric Quartet, and Sean Osborn's Quartet for B-flat Clarinets. Nigel Bourgoine and dancers from the Ballet Theatre of Toledo join the SonoNovo Chamber Ensemble in "The Music of Aaron Copland" at 7 p.m. June 5 and 6 in Trinity Episcopal Church, Adams at St. Clair streets. The University Musical Society at the University of Michigan has announced an extensive performance schedule for the coming season. More than 45 concerts and shows are slated from September, 2009, through April, 2010, in various Ann Arbor locations. Monthly highlights include violinist Itzhak Perlman on Sept. 13 in Hill Auditorium; Suzanne Farrell Ballet on Oct. 9 and 10 in the Power Center, and Anne-Sophie Mutter on Oct. 19 in Hill Auditorium; Patti Lupone on Nov. 20 in Hill Auditorium; and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet performing on Dec. 12 in Hill Auditorium, just a few days before his Carnegie Hall recital. Algerian singer/songwriter/guitarist Souad Massi starts off the new year with a concert Jan. 8 in the Michigan Theater. Bela Fleck will explore the origins of the banjo with "The Africa Project" on Feb. 17 in Hill Auditorium. Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra perform March 17 in Hill Auditorium. The Takacs Quartet with pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin performs April 17 in Rackham Auditorium. The Rest is Noise, an exploration of 20th-century music by writer Alex Ross (based on his book of the same name) and pianist Ethan Iverson, takes place on April 25 in Rackham Auditorium.
