Toledo Symphony to give outdoor concert at Put-In-Bay

The Toledo Symphony will present its annual outdoor concert at Perry's Monument on Put-In-Bay on South Bass Island at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 12. Conductor Chelsea Tipton II will lead the group through a program of classics by Brahms, Copland, and Tchaikovsky plus patriotic music, marches, and show tunes. The free public program is part of the annual Historical Weekend celebration on the Lake Erie Island.

The Toledo Ballet will sponsor a Broadway dance workshop with Ian Knauer from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Franklin Park Mall headquarters. Knauer, a University of Michigan grad who is performing on Broadway in Mamma Mia!, will teach several dances from that production. All intermediate and advanced level dancers are welcome to attend. Tenor Sam Chen is to present a recital at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in St. Lucas Lutheran Church, 745 Walbridge St. Admission is free; donations will go to the church music fund.

Violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman will launch the University Musical Society season with a recital at 4 p.m. Sept. 13 in Hill Auditorium. In his first Ann Arbor appearance since 2000, Perlman will be accompanied by pianist Rohan de Silva in a program including works by LeClair, Beethoven, and Stravinsky. The Children's Choir of Northwest Ohio, a community-wide organization for youngsters in grades 4-7, is seeking singers for its 2009-10 season. Auditions will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 9 and 10, and 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 14 in Community of Christ Lutheran Church, 6517 Finzel Rd., Whitehouse. For information, call 419-877-0607.

Auditions for the Toledo Ballet production of The Nutcracker will be held from noon to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the studio headquarters in Franklin Park Mall, second level across from the cinema.

Performance dates are Dec. 11-13 at the Stranahan Theater. Dancers age 13 and older will try out from noon-2:30 p.m.; dancers ages 9 to 12 will audition from 2:45 to 4 p.m., and 7 and 8 year olds may try out from 4:15-5:30 p.m. There is a $15 audition fee for every applicant. The Lourdes College Chorus welcomes new members for its fall season, which will include performances of Haydn and Mendelssohn on Oct. 11 and the annual Christmas concert with Maumee Community Band on Dec. 6.
