Chamber Music Toledo concert takes world view
4/1/2010Music from around the world is on tap for the next Chamber Music Toledo concert, at 3 p.m. April 11, in First Presbyterian Church, 20 East Broadway, Maumee. The Tecumseh Piano Trio will perform Gypsy, Spanish, Jewish, and Latin American music.
Franz Joseph Haydn's Piano Trio No. 39 (The Gypsy Trio) will open the program performed by pianist Greg Kostraba, violinist Regan Eckstein, and cellist Karen Kruse. Works by Joaquin Turina, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Astor Piazzolla will follow. The Tecumseh Piano Trio has performed throughout the Midwest since 1996.

The Toledo Symphony will present its Mozart and More Concert No. IV at 7:30 p.m. April 10 in the Franciscan Center of Lourdes College in Sylvania. Principal conductor Stefan Sanderling will conduct the orchestra in two works by the series namesake: Symphony No. 39 and Violin Concerto No. 3.
Joining Sanderling and the TSO will be Canadian violinist Karen Gomyo in her Toledo debut.

The University of Toledo will present its 33rd annual Spring Festival of New Music April 6-9 at the UT Center for the Performing Arts. New works written by faculty member David Jex to celebrate the centennial of the UT College of Arts and Sciences and honor the 100th birthday anniversary of Art Tatum are on the program. Works by former UT band director Brant Karrick, and a tribute to former faculty composer Paul Schoenfield also are on the schedule.
Major concerts are set for 8 p.m. April 6 in Doermann Theatre and April 8 in the CPA Recital Hall. Additional events include student performances at 8 p.m. April 7 and 9 in the CPA. An interview with Schoenfield is to take place at 1 p.m. April 8 in the CPA. All events are free.

Free musical doings at Bowling Green State University are many and various in the week ahead, beginning with a guest recital by pianist Ning Yu at 2 p.m. Sunday in Bryan Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center. On the program will be works by Utics, Debussy, Chin, Scriabin, Ligeti, and others. Yu is a faculty member at the Third Street Music School Settlement in New York City.
On the same day and in the same hall, Greek violinist Spyros Gkykontis, a guest artist at BGSU, and faculty violist Vasile Beluska will perform works by Konstandinides, Baltsa, Antoniou, Stamats, and others at 8 p.m.
Woodwind ensembles from the BGSU student ranks will perform in the next Music at the Manor House recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Wildwood Metropark. Also on Tuesday, the BGSU Early Music Ensemble will give a concert at 8 p.m. in Bryan Hall.
The New Music Ensemble will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Center under the direction of Kenneth Thompson.
In tribute to American composer Morton Feldman, the BGSU MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music will present a 2:30 p.m. concert April 10 in Bryan Hall. And the BGSU Collegiate Chorale, directed by Sandra Frey Stegman, will perform at 8 p.m. April 10 in Kobacker Hall.
The Bowling Green Opera Theater will present The Coronation of Poppea by Claudio Monteverdi at 3 p.m. April 11 in Bryan Hall.

Chinese superstar pianist Lang Lang will perform with the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, conducted by Christoph Eschenbach, at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Hill Auditorium, 825 North University Ave., on the University of Michigan campus. The orchestra, which comprises musicians under the age of 27, will perform Symphony No. 1 (Classical) by Sergei Prokofief and Symphony No. 2 by Johannes Brahms. With Lang the orchestra will play Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3. Tickets are $10-$75 at www.ums.org or 734-764-2538.

The African Children's Choir will perform at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. April 7 in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. The traveling group from poor and war-stricken areas of Africa is beginning its spring tour with these concerts.
Proceeds from the tour, which receives funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, will be used to provide education and leadership training in the singers' respective countries. Tickets are $5-$15 at 419-772-1900 or freedcenter.com.

Monday Musicale will offer its April meeting at 1 p.m. Monday in Epworth United Methodist Church, 3077 Valleyview Dr. Performers will include vocalist Barbara Kondalski and pianist Barbara Foote. The recital is free to the public.

The Sigma Alpha Iota international music fraternity will present its Spring Musicale at 3 p.m. April 11 at St. Lucas Lutheran Church, 745 Walbridge Ave., South Toledo. Member and guest performers will include Connie Alleshouse, Robin Price, Karen Biscay, Ed Bloedow, and Sara Wade. A reception will follow this free public event.
