UT offers glimpse of future musicians, teachers

Kay Seymour will conduct 'Once Upon a Time in a Far Away Land' on Oct. 2 at Owens Community College.

It's time to hear tomorrow's professional classical musicians and music teachers in performance today. Well, next week, actually.

The University of Toledo Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will present a concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Doermann Theater of University Hall, 2801 West Bancroft St. Andrew Rhodes will conduct the band in a varied program. Sharing the evening will be the Wind Ensemble, led by Jason Stumbo.

Admission is free.

At Bowling Green State University, the Bowling Green Philharmonia will perform under the direction of Emily Freeman Brown. With a theme of celebrating composer and pianist Franz Liszt, the program will include "Les Preludes," and will also feature faculty pianist Laura Melton performing the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor with the BGP. The BGSU Wind Symphony, Band, and its choirs will show off their best work in an 8 p.m. concert Oct. 1 in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center.

The Owens Community College Concert Band will present its Fall Concert at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 3 in the Fine & Performing Arts Building, 30335 Oregon Rd., on the Owens campus. William Fred Dais will conduct a varied program with faculty soloists - oboist Doug Mead and violinist Simma Korostyshevsky - taking the spotlight. Taking a turn on the podium, retired commander of the 555th Air Force Band, LTC Robert Krichbaum will conduct James Christensen's Hometown Celebration. Admission is free with refreshments served in the lobby following the concert.

The Toledo Museum of Art will continue its free, public Great Performances in the Great Gallery series with a concert of music for flute, harp and piano at 3 p.m. Oct. 3. Flutist Roselyn Smith, harpist Denise Fink, and pianist Dean Bell will perform music by composers from Albeniz and Faure to Liszt and Persichetti.

The Pride of Toledo Chorus, an award-winning barbershop group, will present its annual concert, "Once Upon a Time in a Far Away Land," at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Owens Community College Fine & Performing Arts Building, 30335 Oregon Rd. Kay Seymour will conduct the program with guests the Bustin' Loose Quartet from the Johnny Appleseed District.

The movement of music from Baroque-era Spain to the New World through song and performances on period instruments is the focus of a concert by La Capella Reial de Catalunya with Hesperion XXI, formed and directed by Jordi Savall, at 8 p.m. Sept. 30 in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 2250 East Stadium Blvd., Ann Arbor. Kerrytown Concert House will present its 14th annual Edgefest from Sept. 29 to Oct. 2 at the historic venue, 415 North Fourth Ave., Ann Arbor. This year's theme is Edged in Brass and brings an international array of artists to town for concerts, public discussions, workshops, and school residencies.

The festival kicks off Wednesday with a 7 p.m. concert by clarinetist Ned Rothenberg and his MIVOS quartet and winds up with Matt Bauder's program, "Day in Pictures."

At 8:30 p.m. Sept. 30, Amir ElSaffar's Two Rivers Ensemble will perform on voice, saxophone, buzuq, oud, bass, drums, and Arabic percussion. Also performing will be Taylor Ho Bynum's Spider Monkey Strings.

Auditions for the Von Heidecke Chicago Festival Ballet production of The Nutcracker will be held Oct. 2 at the Ritz Theatre, 30 South Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio. Dancers ages 7 to 12 will be seen at 1 p.m. and dancers 13 to 18 will audition at 2 p.m. A rehearsal will follow the auditions for all who are cast.
