Chamber Music Toledo names Trace director
12/15/2010Back by popular demand, Chamber Music Toledo has announced its 2010-2011 season with a brand new artistic director, Cheryl Trace.
"CMT was founded by Greg Kostraba in 2007," she said. "We are pleased to continue his dedication to increasing interest in chamber music by presenting live performances at an affordable cost.Our goal is to present friendly and accessible music that can be enjoyed at many levels."
Trace plays violin and viola for the Toledo Symphony, Apollo's Fire, and the ZIN String Quartet, and teaches Suzuki violin at the Toledo Symphony School of Music. Kostraba, former classical music director at WGTE-FM91, is now program director at WBAA in West Lafayette, Ind.
The new season will open with a performance by the Tower Brass Quintet at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Maumee, 200 East Broadway, Maumee.
The quintet is based in Bowling Green but enjoys an international reputation earned during its 31 seasons of performances, master classes, and recordings.
Members David Saygers, Brian Bushong, Larry Herman, Bernice Schwartz, and Dan Saygers will perform their holiday program, Christmas Brassed, which includes "Emma's Christmas," a story by Irene Trivas set to music by tubist David Saygers. Brad Cresswell, classical music director of WGTE-FM91 will join the group as narrator.
Tickets start at $12 in advance through the Toledo Symphony, 419-246-8000, and $15 at the door, with lower prices for children, seniors, and students.
The season will continue in 2011 with a 3 p.m. performance March 13 featuring clarinetist Jocelyn Langworthy and the Cathay Trio, and a program devoted to music for children set for June 5, both in the Presbyterian church.
• The Toledo Symphony will wrap up its busy holiday concert season with a few more performances this weekend. Resident conductor Jeffrey Pollock will lead the orchestra in a 7 p.m. regional concert Saturday at the Delta High School Performing Arts Center, 605 Taylor St., Delta. On the program will be Christmas music from classical, popular, and traditional sources. Mezzo soprano Julie Barnes will be featured soloist, and a sing-along is planned.
A Neighborhood Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday is to be presented at All Saints Church, 628 Lime City Rd., Rossford. Joining Pollock and the TSO will be soprano Carol Dusdieker in works by Bernstein and Adam.
• The Toledo School for the Arts will present its beginning percussion players in a 7 p.m. concert Monday at the school's Attic Theater, 333 14th St. Tickets at the door are $3-$5.
• The Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Van Wert, Ohio, has announced the return of the State Ballet of Russia, this time with the classic Tchaikovsky ballet, Swan Lake, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1. A ballet in four acts, the story of princes and princesses, jealousy and deceit, will feature soloists Marta Flippova, Yulia Nepomniashchava, Anastassia Russinova, and Ivan Alexeev with Svetlana Noskova and Alexandr Lityagin. Lyudmila Sycheva is artistic director.

Tapping the success of Metropolitan Opera Live in HD simulcasts, the Los Angeles Philharmonic with new music director Gustavo Dudamel will take to the big screen at Rave Motion Pictures outlets nationwide, including Fallen Timbers 14 for three concerts starting at 5 p.m. Jan. 9. The first program will focus on music by Beethoven; the second concert, March 13, will present works by Tchaikovsky, and the final show, June 5, will feature music of Brahms. Tickets are $16-$20 per concert at the Rave box office or online at movietickets.com.
The Perrysburg Suburban Singers will present a Christmas Kaleidoscope Sunday at 7 p.m. at Perrysburg Presbyterian Church on East Second Street. A freewill offering will be taken.
