Choirs, soloists to join symphony for Beethoven's 9th
1/26/2011The Bowling Green State University Choral Society, Collegiate Chorale, and A Cappella Choir will perform with the TSO. Soloists will be soprano Arianna Zukerman, mezzo Stacey Rishoi, tenor Scott Ramsay, and baritone Richard Zeller.
Zukerman, a Juilliard School graduate, is on the faculty of Catholic University in Washington and performs opera and choral works from coast to coast. Rishoi, 1999 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions winner, has appeared with the Toledo Opera and other opera companies. Ramsay has appeared with the Lyric Opera in Chicago and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra among many performances coast to coast. Zeller has spent 12 seasons at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and has appeared nationally and internationally in operatic and orchestral productions. ‡ The Festival Series at Bowling Green State University will continue with a public performance by pianist Robert Levin at 8 p.m. Feb. 5 in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center. Levin, a performer, musicologist, and scholar, specializes in Baroque and Classical periods, and has reconstructed unfinished works by Mozart and Bach. Levin also is a proponent of improvisational ornamentation in the style of Mozart and other composers.
A preconcert talk will begin at 7:15 p.m. Tickets start at $10 at 419-372-8171.
Levin also will present a lecture-performance, Embellishment, Improvisation, and Cadenzas in Mozart, at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 4 in Kobacker Hall. This program is free.
The one-act opera Pelleas et Melisande is to be presented by the Bowling Green State University Opera Theater at 3 p.m. Sunday in Bryan Recital Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center.
German violinist Annette Barbara Vogel will present a free Guest Artist Recital at 8 p.m. Monday in Bryan hall.
Music in the Manor House at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday will feature trombone students of William Mathis and Garth Simmons. This free performance is in Wildwood Preserve Metropark.
Faculty pianist Laura Melton will present a free recital at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Bryan Recital Hall.
‡ The University of Toledo Jazz Lab Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Crystals Lounge of the Ramada Inn, Secor Road at Westgate. Tickets are $3 at the door.
The Dorothy MacKenzie Price Piano Recital Series is to continue at 3 p.m. Feb. 6 when Louis Nagel performs in a free program in the UT Center for the Performing Arts Recital Hall.
A Juilliard School graduate, Nagel has been on the faculty of the University of Michigan since 1969 and is a frequent recitalist in the United States and abroad. His program will include works by Bach, Chopin, and Schumann. Nagel also will present a free master class at 10 a.m. Feb. 5 in the Recital Hall.
Rehearsals for the UT Community Chorus, directed by Stephen Hodge, will begin at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 in Room 1019 in the CPA. Parking passes are furnished for singers, who may borrow or purchase music.
The chorus has been activesince 1996, with pianist Gladys Rudolph accompanying. This year's program will be the Faure Requiem, to be performed April 10. ‡ The University Musical Society in Ann Arbor will present the Cleveland Orchestra with music director Franz Welser-Most and pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Hill Auditorium. The Schumann Piano Concerto in A Minor highlights a program which also includes the Overture to Tannhauser by Richard Wagner and Bela Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celeste. Tickets start at $10.
Wynton Marsalis will be in Ann Arbor with his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Hill Auditorium. On the program will be selections from Marsalis' new Vitoria Suite and music by Chick Corea. Tickets start at $10.
Violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and her own New Century Chamber Orchestra will perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 4 in the Rackham Auditorium on the University of Michigan campus. Works by Wolf, Bartok, Piazzolla, and Tchaikovsky will be on the program.Tickets start at $24.

‡ Sales have been so brisk for the Toledo Symphony's invitational debut in Carnegie Hall on May 8 that the original 1,000 tickets consigned for local sale have been nearly sold out. The TSO is planning to order more tickets, but all local sales must be completed by Feb. 1. After that, the $25 tickets will only be available through Carnegie's box office.
