The Hot Flashes '50s harmonies heat up Rhythm on the River

The Hot Flashes will give concert goers a flashback into the '50s when they perform at the Rhythm on the River art series in Grand Rapids Sunday. The ladies from Pemberville will perform renditions of songs from the Beach Boys, Leslie Gore, and Neil Sedaka in three-part harmony with a twist. Show time is at 4 p.m. at the Wright Pavilion, located on the towpath between the canal and the Maumee River at the end of Lincoln Street behind LaRoe's Restaurant. The songs include classics like "It's My Party," "My Boyfriend's Back," and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." The event is free to the public and blankets and lawn chairs are welcome. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Grand Rapids Town Hall on Front Street.

Take off your shoes. They're barefootin' at Maumee Bay State Park beach for the 10th Annual Barefoot at the Beach fund-raiser Saturday. Fireworks will light up the sky at the benefit, which will also include food from 15 area restaurants, live music, and a cash bar. Tickets are $100 for the event which kicks off at 6 p.m. The beach will be transformed into a tropical island, complete with huts and palm trees. The event serves as a fund-raiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Toledo. Guests must be 21 or older to attend.

Michael Glabicki, vocalist for multi-faceted jam band Rusted Root, will play one of his regular Toledo shows Sunday night at Frankie's Inner-City. Rusted Root formed in Pittsburgh in 1990 and was an alt-rock radio staple in the mid-1990s with songs such as "Send Me On My Way" and "Ecstasy." Tickets are $12 in advance and they are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, www.ticketmaster.com, and at Culture Clash, 419-536-5683, and Ramalama Records, 419-531-7625. Tickets are $15 at the door, night of show. Doors open at 8 p.m. The opening act is Dragon Wagon.
