Boyd to present piano recital in Great Gallery

Pianist Michael Boyd will perform a free recital Sunday at the Toledo Museum of Art.

University of Toledo pianist Michael Boyd will perform a free recital in the Toledo Museum of Art's Great Music in the Great Gallery Series at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Boyd is a Steinway artist with master's and doctoral degrees from Eastman School of Music. He has performed with the Rochester Philharmonic, the Milwaukee Symphony, and at guest recitals in Spain.

On the Sunday program will be English Suite No. 2 in A minor by J.S. Bach; Mazurkas, a Prelude, and Etude by Chopin, and Ravel's Introduction and Allegro transcribed for piano, plus excerpts from other Ravel works.

Mozart Madness is on deck at Trinity Episcopal Church downtown, part of its Performing Artist Series. Founder-conductor Wayne Anthony will lead the resident SonoNovo Chamber Ensemble in an exploration of fave works by the incredible Wolfgang A. (1756-1791) at 7 p.m. Friday in the church sanctuary.

Violinist Priscilla Johnson and violist Susan Schreiber will perform the Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat major, K. 364 with the ensemble. Clarinetist Lesli McCage will take the spotlight for the Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622.

Saturday's Mozart and More Series IV concert by the Toledo Symphony will serve as solo debut for principal bassoonist Gareth Thomas, now in his second season with the orchestra. The 7:30 p.m. concert in the Franciscan Center at Lourdes University in Sylvania also will introduce guest conductor James Feddeck to Toledo audiences.

The program will open with the Mendelssohn Overture to The Fair Melusine, a tone poem inspired by a German mermaid myth with lots of watery effects. Thomas will perform Mozart's Concerto for Bassoon, and the concert will conclude with Schubert's Symphony No. 3 in D Major.

Thomas, a native of Ottawa, Ontario, was a prize-winning graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, following that distinction with a music master's degree from Northwestern University. After winning the National Arts Centre Orchestra's Bursary Competition in Ottawa in 2006, he made his debut with that group the following year.

Feddeck, currently assistant conductor at the Cleveland Orchestra, where he also leads the Youth Orchestra, earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, then studied conducting at the University of Michigan. He won the Glimmerglass Opera Conducting Prize in 2006 and the Aspen Conducting Prize in 2008, among other awards. Feddeck also is a prizewinning organist and an oboist.

On Sunday, the Toledo Symphony and its three youth orchestras will come together for the annual Side-by-Side Concert at 4 p.m. in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle. On the program will be music by Grieg, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, and Mussorgsky.

Featured performers in the first half of the program will be concerto winners in the Toledo Symphony League's annual competition. Pianist Meredith Bixler will perform the first movement of MacDowell's Piano Concerto No. 2. Pianist Michelle Li will play the first movement of Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2, and violinist Giancarlo Latta will perform the first movement of the Violin Concerto No. 2 by Prokofiev. The symphony and resident conductor Jeffrey Pollock will provide accompaniment.

Shen Yun, a traveling review of Chinese classical music and dance, will return to Toledo for shows at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the Stranahan Theater. Bowling Green State University's Music at the Forefront will present singer Ted Hearne and electronic musician Philip White at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Cla-Zel Theatre, 127 N. Main St., Bowling Green. American composer Libby Larsen, this year's Helen McMaster Endowed Professor at BGSU, will be featured in a free concert of her works at 8 p.m. Friday in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center.

Monday's concert at BGSU with guest saxophonist Steve Wilson has been rescheduled for March 23 at 8 p.m. in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center. Admission is free.

Music in the Manor House, a BGSU College of Musical Arts production, will continue with An Evening of Art Songs performed by voice students of Myra Merritt, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Wildwood Metropark Manor House. The series is free.

The Perrysburg Symphony Chorale will perform music of the Civil War in concerts at 7 p.m. March 23 in Trinity Episcopal Church downtown, and at 2 p.m. March 25 in St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, Perrysburg. Wayne Anthony will conduct the themed program and the Perrysburg High School Chorale will join the community group for this event. Of particular interest will be the area premiere of Jeffrey Van's work for chorus and guitar, "A Procession Winding Around Me," based on Walt Whitman's war poetry. Tickets are $5-$10 at the door; children under age 12 are free.

A concert of winners in the American Guild of Organists Toledo Chapter student competition is to be presented at 3 p.m. Sunday in St. Joseph's Church Sylvania. Performers will be Denielle Buenger, Alana Henkel, Melissa Flowers, Dennis Johns, Grant Wohl, and Jordan Brosten. Admission is free.
