Final Pops Concert of the season will salute Sinatra

Steve Lippia will present Simply Sinatra with the Toledo Symphony at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Stranahan.

A tribute to one of the best vocal stylists in history, Frank Sinatra, will bring this year's Keybank Pops Concert series to a close with panache.

Simply Sinatra with Steve Lippia is the title of the Toledo Symphony event at 8 p.m. Saturday in Stranahan Theater.

Lippia, a Las Vegas resident, has garnered wide praise and sold-out engagements with orchestras across North America. A Connecticut native, Lippia gives a convincingly accurate recreation of Sinatra's distinctive way with a pop song.

Accompanied by the symphony with resident conductor Jeffrey Pollock on the podium, Lippia will work his way through a list of favorites by Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, Jerome Kerns, Stephen Sondheim, Rodgers and Hart, Paul Anka, and Sammy Cahn, among others.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame is the title of the final Family Series concert, set for 3 p.m. Sunday in the Peristyle.

Pollock will conduct a program of polkas, marches, and popular music inspired by the national sport. Narrator Robert Clemens will read the classic poem, Casey at the Bat to music by Reineke.

Presented in collaboration with the Toledo Mud Hens, the program will be preceded by family-oriented activities in the Peristyle lobby starting at 2 p.m.

A Gospel Fest Choir Workshop is planned for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 19 in All Saints Episcopal Church, 563 Pinewood Ave. Singer Barbara Tucker, pianist Philip Hall, and violinist Obed Shelton will lead this session.

At 7 p.m. the soloists will offer a concert of gospel music. Reservations for the workshop are $20 per person; the price includes breakfast and lunch. Tickets for the concert are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. For reservations, call 419-246-2461.

The Toledo Opera's final production of this season, Puccini's Turandot, will be performed in a concert-style version at 8 p.m. Friday in the Peristyle.

Stefan Sanderling will conduct the Toledo Symphony, the Toledo Opera Chorus and Children's Chorus, and soloists Amy Louise Yekel and Adam Laurence, Jenny and Brad Cresswell, Stephen West, Jeremy Kelly, Martin Coyle, Vale Rideout, and Timothy Bruno in the composer's final opera. The Toledo School for the Arts will present its annual Kaleidoscope production -- a survey of music, dance, visual arts, and more by students -- at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday in the Valentine Theatre.

Ballet Theatre of Toledo will hold an open house from 2 to 4:30 p.m. May 20 at its studios, 1124 Corporate Dr., Holland. The event will include a chance to watch dance classes, look at exhibits of costumes and props from the company's productions, and learn about upcoming opportunities.

On the schedule is an announcement about the new world premiere scheduled for the 2012-2013 season, a full-length fairy-tale ballet by Ballet Theatre of Toledo founder Nigel Burgoine. Known for its collaborations with the Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo Opera, Toledo Symphony, SonoNovo Chamber Ensemble, and other cultural groups, the studio recently was awarded a medal by the Ohio National Guard for presenting dance events at military functions.

The Cleveland Orchestra will present a concert version of the Richard Strauss opera Salome, under the baton of music director Franz Welser-Most, at 8 p.m. May 19 and 26 in Severance Hall, 11001 Euclid Ave., Cleveland.

This is the first time the orchestra and Welser-Most have performed this dramatic work. The event also will be presented in Carnegie Hall at 8 p.m. May 24.

A preview of opera stars of tomorrow is offered at 7 p.m. Saturday by the Arbor Opera in a series of workshop scenes from Mozart's Marriage of Figaro at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1500 Scio Church Rd., Ann Arbor. Performers will reveal the results of a two-week workshop that draws from across the country. Admission is free.
