Cleveland vocal group to perform in Rosary Cathedral

The Cathedral Music series will introduce the Cleveland vocal group Vox Choralis in a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Blvd.

Directed by David Jaronowski, the ensemble specializes in Renaissance polyphony and is the resident professional ensemble at Mary, Queen of Peace Parish in Cleveland. Singers are Ashley Close, Rachel Fasano, Joy Powell, Jeffrey Quick, Thomas Majercik, Dani Arndt, and Amanda and David Jaranowski.

Jazzman Gene Parker will be featured in a free concert at 4 p.m. Sunday in Monroe Street United Methodist Church, 2313 Monroe St. Parker will play numbers from the American Family Songbook.

The Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestra is set to perform its second concert of the current season -- its 63rd year -- at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle. High school musicians from more than 40 northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan high schools will appear in the Philharmonic, Symphonic, and Concert orchestras.

Conducting will be Kenneth Thompson, Wasim Hawary, and Robert Mirakian. On the program will be music by Gustav Holst, Aaron Copland, J.S. Bach, Anton Dvorak, and others. The concert is free.

University of Toledo faculty pianist Michael Boyd will present a free recital at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Toledo Museum of Art Great Gallery. On his program will be music by Beethoven, Wagner/Tausig, and Liszt.

It's a busy weekend for music at Bowling Green State University. The University Choral Society will be appearing with the Toledo Symphony in the Classics Series concerts at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Peristyle. Under the direction of James Meena, the big choir will sing Carl Off's Carmina Burana, joined by the Ottawa Hills Children's Chorus.

The BGSU Festival Series will introduce Greg Anderson and Elizabeth Joy Rose, a rising star piano duo, at 8 p.m. Saturday in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center. Ticket information is available at 419-372-2181.

On campus, the third annual David DuBois Piano Competition will be under way, a chance for talented high school musicians to compete for cash prizes. Semifinals are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with finals set for 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, both in Kobacker Hall.

On Monday, the Music from the Forefront of the Mid-American Center for Contemporary Music will present the Meridien Arts Ensemble at 8 p.m. in the Clazel Theatre, North Main Street in Bowling Green. The group also will appear at 8 p.m. Monday in Bryan Hall.

On Tuesday, cello students of Alan Smith will present a free recital in the Music in the Manor House Series at Wildwood Preserve Metropark, West Central Avenue. Music starts at 7:30 p.m.

The Faculty Artist Series will present cellist Smith and pianist Thomas Rosenkranz in a free public recital at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Bryan.

The acclaimed Berlin Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet is to perform at 8 p.m. Saturday in Rackham Auditorium on the University of Michigan campus. Members Michael Hasel, flute; Andreas Wittmann, oboe, Walter Seyfarth, clarinet, Fergus McWilliam, horn, and Marion Reinhard, bassoon, will be joined by pianist Martin Katz.

On the program will be Mozart's Fantasy for Mechanical Organ, Trois Pieces Breves by Ibert, "La Cheminee due roi Rene" by Milhaud, Poulenc's Sextet, and Kalevi Aho's 2006 composition, Windquintet.

Coming up in Ann Arbor, the English Concert conducted by Harry Bicket with famed countertenor David Daniels will be at 4 p.m. Feb. 17 in Hill Auditorium.

The Toledo Piano Teachers Association will present its monthly program at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 3620 Heatherdowns Blvd. Gay Galvin will lead a workshop on improvisation. The event is free and open to the public.

The Trinity Performing Arts Series will continue its harp-themed mini-series of concerts Feb. 15 with Harp Madness, an evening music by Julie Buzelli and students. Music starts at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary, 316 Adams St. Tickets are $15-$20 at the door.
