Choral society honors Toledo music greats

  • This weekend, the Toledo Choral Society pays homage to several Toledo music figureheads with a tributes concert. Richard Napierala will conduct.

    A new piece by Toledo composer David Jex, Celebration for Art Tatum, honors the Toledo-born jazz legend. The suite of five expressive movements is based on poetry by the Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes.

    Pianist Alvin Waddles, a Detroit native, will also perform works celebrating Tatum’s innovative jazz spirit. American folk songs and gospel music offered by the chorus will round out the program.

    Proceeds of the event will benefit the Bernard Sanchez Memorial Scholarship at the University of Toledo. Sanchez made a significant impact across the Toledo musical community for more than 50 years, and the scholarship seeks to continue the legacy of music education and excellence he fostered during his lifetime.

    The concert beigns at 3 p.m. Sunday at Doermann Theatre, University Hall, University of Toledo, 3801 W. Bancroft St. Tickets are $20 at toledochoralsociety.org or at the door.

    ■ The Voice of Harmony Barbershop Chorus presents “An Evening of a Capella!” assisted by BGSU-affiliated quartet Tune Squad, and the chapter’s own quartet, TMS, at 7 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, 126 S. Church St., Bowling Green. Admission is free.

    ■ The concert series in Walbridge Park offers Extra Stout performing Irish music in a free concert from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the park’s bandstand, 2761 Broadway. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Next week’s performance will be by the Bradberries (classic rock).

    ■ The free Music at the Market Concert Series in conjunction with the Perrysburg Farmers’ Market opens with the Academy Brass Quintet performing a wide variety of favorites beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday on the Commodore Schoolyard lawn, 140 E. Indiana Ave., Perrysburg. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Next week’s performance will be by the Madison Avenue Band.

    ■ The free Toledo Lucas County Public Library Brown Bag Summer Concert Series continues with Kerry Patrick Clark performing folk music from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Wednesday on the north lawn of the Main Library of the Toledo Lucas County Public Library, 325 N. Michigan St. June 20’s performance will be by Glass City Steel Drums.

    ■ The free Wednesday at Woodland June Concert Series continues with classical guitarist and composer Hector Mendoza performing at noon Wednesday at shelter area of Woodland Park, 429 East Boundary St. Perrysburg.     Jim Curry joins the Adrian Symphony Orchestra for Country Roads, a musical tribute to John Denver. The concert begins at 8 p.m. Friday at Dawson Auditorium, Adrian College, Adrian. Tickets are $12 to $29 and available at 517-264-3121 or adriansymphony.org. A free patio party begins at 7 p.m. on the grounds outside the auditorium.

    ■ The five-piece progressive music ensemble Talking Ear performs new music based on collaboration and improvisation at 7 p.m. Thursday; tickets are $15. The Charlie Ballantine Quartet offers Americana-influenced jazz at 8 p.m. Friday; tickets are $20. Thollem McDonas and his trio are in concert at 8 p.m. Saturday; tickets are $20.     ■ Sights and Sounds on Thursday Nights begins Thursday across downtown Chelsea, Mich. Slated performers are: Creole du Norde (Cajun zydeco), TC and the Roadmasters (blues), Delbert Walling & Haley Houtz (pop/indie), and Corndaddy (alternative rock/country).     ■ The Ballet Theatre of Toledo will hold three summer workshops with professional guest artists. At the company, precompany, and advanced level are: stretching, technique, pointe, and repertoire with Thomas Bell and Samantha Shelton from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. June 13, and stretching, technique, pointe, and repertoire with Dawnell Dryja and Christian Griggs Drane from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. June 14. Fee is $100 per day; $175 for both. At the intermediate 2 level is a technique class with Dryja from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. June 14; fee is $25.

    ■ Toledo Summer Strings Workshop, under the direction of Cecilia Johnson, will offer opportunities for amateur adult string students, ages 18 and older, to explore chamber music in a nonthreatening environment. Rehearsals will take place 7 to 9 p.m. July 9 and 16, 7 to 9 p.m. July 12 and 19, and 10 a.m. to noon July 21 with a final concert 3 p.m. July 22 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 316 N.     ■ The Toledo Opera is holding open auditions for the Toledo Opera Chorus. Interested singers should bring a prepared piece of music: opera arias, musical theater selections, or art songs are suitable repertoire. A pianist will be provided.
