Chinese drywall complaints include foul smell and illness
10/29/2009WASHINGTON — The federal government says in a new report that Chinese drywall used to build thousands of homes has higher amounts of some chemical substances than its American counterparts.
But the report released Thursday stopped short of linking it to health problems, foul smells or corrosion reported by homeowners, saying further study was needed.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency and others have been analyzing the drywall.
Construction companies imported millions of pounds of cheap Chinese-made drywall during the height of the U.S. housing boom, when building materials were scarce.
Homeowners now complain that fumes from the wallboard that smell like rotten eggs are destroying properties and even making them ill.
