OSU, UM have prime-time games
4/25/2012The Big Ten announced its television schedule for the 2012 football season and Ohio State and Michigan will each have three prime-time games, as assigned by the conference.
Ohio State's contests in prime time will be: Oct. 6 against Nebraska, 8 p.m. on ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2; Oct. 13 at Indiana, 8 p.m. on the Big Ten Network; and Oct. 27 at Penn State, 6 p.m. on ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2.
Michigan's games in prime time: Sept. 22 at Notre Dame, 7:30 p.m. on NBC; Oct. 6 at Purdue, 4 p.m. on the Big Ten Network; and Oct. 27 at Nebraska, 8 p.m. on ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2.
The networks may add more prime-time assignments and the schedule for the first three weekends (Sept. 1, Sept. 8 and Sept. 15) will be released no later than July 1.
College basketball
University of Toledo women's assistant basketball coach Nitra Perry has accepted the head coaching position at Kennesaw State.
Perry, who was associate head coach, informed UT players of her decision this week that she was leaving for the school in Georgia.
She becomes the second assistant coach to leave UT this offseason, joining Todd Mitmesser who is moving to New York where his wife accepted a job.
UT head coach Tricia Cullop replaced Mitmesser with former New Mexico assistant Vicki Hall.
■ NEW YORK -- Hall of Fame coach Pat Summitt, who last week announced she was stepping down after 38 years at the University of Tennessee, has a book deal.
The record-setting leader of the Lady Volunteers' basketball team has an agreement with Crown Archetype for a memoir that is currently untitled. Crown announced the deal and says the book will cover her "full life journey," including her diagnosis last year of early-onset dementia, Alzheimer's type. Publication is expected next spring.
Hockey
The Miami University hockey team will play an outdoor game at Soldier Field next season against Notre Dame, according to WSBT-TV in South Bend, Ind.
The game is scheduled for Feb. 17, as part of a doubleheader that also will feature a game between Wisconsin and Minnesota, the report said.
■ MOSCOW -- Valeri Vasilyev, a standout Soviet Union defenseman who won two Olympic gold medals, has died at 62.
His death was announced by his longtime club Dinamo Moscow. The statement last Thursday said he died of a serious illness but did not elaborate.
Vasilyev played on the Soviet teams that won Olympic gold medals in 1972 and 1976. He also played on the national team when it had two of its biggest losses -- the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" match that put the United States into the gold-medal game at the Lake Placid Olympics, and the 1972 Summit Series against Canadian NHL players.
In 13 years on the national team, he scored 43 goals in 285 games.
