7,700 Eastern Michigan students told they're out; email was meant for 100

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Eastern Michigan University has determined that about 7,700 students got email notices kicking them out of school for bad grades -- a message intended for only 100 students.

Officials of the school said Tuesday that the emails were sent last week by a third-party provider. School President Susan Martin is apologizing for the incident, calling it an "inexcusable mistake."

The email starts by telling the recipient that as a result of "winter 2012 academic performance," he or she has been "dismissed from Eastern Michigan University."

It also mentions a way for students to appeal.

Eastern Michigan is west of Detroit in Ypsilanti and has about 23,500 graduate and undergraduate students.
