2 firms in regions fined for safety infractions

A Bowling Green pet food manufacturer and a Toledo cabinet and countertop fabricator have been fined for safety violations found at work sites by inspectors from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Vitakraft Sunseed Inc., of Bowling Green was fined $38,500 for five "serious" violations, including three repeat violations, during a Feb. 13 inspection at its manufacturing site in Weston, Ohio. Repeat violations included not using safety controls on potentially hazardous machinery and failing to train workers on using the safety controls.

Surface Enterprise Inc. of Toledo was fined $20,400 for 11 "serious" violations found during a Dec. 15 inspection of its factory at 1465 W. Alexis Rd. Among the violations were exposing workers to machinery hazards, not using safety controls on hazardous machinery, and failing to train workers on using the safety controls.

Both firms have the right to appeal the fines.
