ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — New Jersey is welcoming back the Miss America pageant with a ceremony on Atlantic City’s boardwalk for all 53 contestants.

Tuesday’s signing-in ceremony features each of the contestants signing her state on a map of the United States and saying a few words of introduction.

The pageant is returning to the Jersey shore city where it was founded after a six-year run in Las Vegas.

There’s one contestant from each state, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. They gathered across from Boardwalk Hall, where the competition will be held.

The competition will end with the crowning of the next Miss America on Sept. 15 in a nationwide television broadcast.
