Monroe's 183-year-old Trinity Episcopal Church getting state historical recognition Saturday
5/17/2014MONROE — A 183-year-old southeastern Michigan church is getting a state historic marker this weekend.
A dedication ceremony is scheduled at 11 a.m. today at Trinity Episcopal Church in Monroe.
Trinity Episcopal historian James R. Johnson says the congregation was founded in 1831 and moved to its current location in 1868 after a fire in Monroe’s central business district destroyed its previous home.
Johnson says the limestone building appears much as it did when it opened 146 years ago.
The public dedication ceremony includes remarks from Mayor Robert E. Clark and state historical commissioner Brian J. Egen, as well as music by the group Fiddlesix and light refreshments.
