RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A railroad bridge has collapsed onto a closed freeway in Riverside, killing a construction worker.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported that the bridge fell on Highway 91 at about 3:15 a.m. today.

Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga told the newspaper that the worker was involved in the demolition of the Pachappa railroad overcrossing.

The newspaper reports the freeway was shut down in both directions during the work so no motorists were endangered by the collapse.

The accident delayed the reopening of the freeway, snarling traffic.
