WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will present the medal of honor to an Afghanistan war veteran severely injured by a grenade blast.

Retired Cpl. William “Kyle” Carpenter is the eighth living recipient to be chosen for the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan. Obama plans to give Carpenter his medal during a White House ceremony June 19.

Carpenter was wounded in 2010 while on guard in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. He lost his right eye, among other injuries, and was medically retired last summer due to his wounds.

Carpenter is a native of Fleetwood, Mississippi, and now is a student at the University of South Carolina.
