2 dead after their small plane crashes on slope at Colorado ski area
6/30/2014GEORGETOWN, Colo. — Two people are dead after their small plane crashed into a slope at the Loveland Ski Area in Colorado.
The single-engine plane crashed and burst into flames today, setting off a small wildfire that was quickly contained.
The Loveland Ski Area is about 55 miles west of Denver.
Capt. Randy Long of the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office says a witness told authorities the plane was trying to cross the Continental Divide. The plane attempted to turn around when it appeared it didn’t have enough power to clear the mountains. It then crashed near a ski lift.
The plane’s identification numbers were destroyed in the fire, and authorities don’t have any details yet about where it was headed.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
