Flooding closes 2 Mississippi River bridges
7/7/2014ST. LOUIS — Two Mississippi River bridges are closed due to flooding, and with more storms in the forecast, there is growing concern that conditions could worsen in parts of Missouri and Illinois.
The Champ Clark Bridge at Louisiana, Missouri, closed Sunday. The next nearest bridge is in Hannibal, Missouri, 35 miles to the north.
The Quincy Memorial Bridge in Quincy, Illinois, shut down early today. The impact there isn’t as severe because Quincy has two bridges, and the other is not threatened.
Water levels on the Mississippi River shot up in the past couple of weeks due to a series of strong storms in the upper Midwest. The National Weather Service says heavy rain is expected in northern Missouri through Tuesday morning, creating the potential for more flooding in Missouri and Illinois.
