Emily Avery, a senior from Toledo, hopes to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology next year, majoring in engineering. She eventually hopes to become a partner in a large engineering firm, designing buildings. Emily's favorite subjects are physics, chemistry, and math.

Emily is a second-team all-league goalkeeper and captain of the soccer team. She has been section leader of the Toledo Youth Orchestra and school orchestra for two years and has received superior ratings on viola solos at the OMEO solo and ensemble competitions. She has received the Bausch and Lomb Science award, placed second in physics at the Science Olympiad, and is a National Merit semifinalist.

Emily participates in numerous extracurricular activities. She is a four-year varsity soccer player and violist, as well as a two-year member of the school band, the Science Olympiad team, the Russian club, National Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta (Honors) Math Club. She often has to struggle to find time for the community service projects she would like to participate in; however, she has been involved in CYMBAL (Community Youth Motivated by Arts Learning), a program to teach the visual and performing arts to children who would otherwise receive little exposure to them.

"Emily is an extremely well-rounded student," said teacher Andrew Frank. "She is very focused on her goals and has unlimited potential."

Emily is the daughter of Galen and Barbara Avery.
