Luna Pier to pick firm for sewage plant upgrade

6/27/2007

LUNA PIER, Mich. - City Council tonight will select an engineering firm to expand and upgrade its wastewater treatment plant.

The plant serves all of Luna Pier and parts of LaSalle Township.

The roughly $1.5 million project would increase the plant's capacity from 348,000 to about 700,000 gallons a day.

The council also may discuss extending some service into parts of Erie Township. Erie does not have its own plant; septic tanks are used to manage waste.

Luna Pier is one of the Monroe County municipalities whose wastewater treatment is not managed by the county drain commission.

The plant is more than 30 years old and needs to be upgraded to accommodate growth and to meet new Michigan Department of Environmental Quality standards, said Richard L. Murray, Jr., the city councilman heading up the project.

The meeting will be at

7:30 p.m. in the municipal building, 4357 Buckeye St.
