  • Above, Jerry Fogle of Dundee, Mich., lets fire as he portrays a Potawatomi warrior during a re-enactment Saturday in Monroe, Mich., of the 1813 Battle of the River Raisin. He was part of the Indian chief Tecumseh's forces, who supported British troops at war with the United States.

At right, from left, Maggie McGarry, 9, of Erie, Mich., Briana Princehorn, 10, of Luna Pier, Mich., Emily Folk of Erie, Mich., and Lindsay Bennette, 9, of La Salle, Mich., catch the action and try to stay warm. They are fourth graders at Mason Consolidated Schools. Their teacher, Adele Lietaert, offered extra credit to those who attended the re-enactment. The students are studying the War of 1812 and how Michigan became a state.
