Old Mill to host Smithsonian food exhibit

The Smithsonian Institution s traveling exhibition Key Ingredients: America by Food and Michigan Foodways, will be at The Old Mill Museum, 242 Toledo St., Dundee, from Feb. 1 through March 16.

The exhibition will show how Americans historically have grown and served foods, and how cuisine is a product of regional uniqueness and international diversity.

The grand opening will be at 6 p.m. tomorrow.

Free events: chocolate candy-making demonstration, 2 p.m. Sunday; ice carving demonstration 2 p.m. Feb. 9, and food preservation, 10 a.m. Feb. 27.

Ticketed events are wild game and wine tasting, 6 p.m. Saturday, $18 in advance or $20 at the door; fish fry and wine tasting, 3 p.m. Feb. 9, $7; Native American luncheon, noon Feb. 13, $11; firehouse chili challenge, noon Feb. 17, $5; German Fest dinner and dance, 6 p.m. March 1, $20.

Weekly events include coffee hours from 7-10 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, and preschool story hour with a food theme, 11:30 a.m. Mondays.

Exhibition hours run from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, 7 a.m. to noon on Mondays and Wednesdays, and noon to 8 p.m. Fridays. Closed Thursdays.
