Boat safety classes set in Monroe

2/6/2008

MONROE - There still may be ice on rivers and lakes, but boating enthusiasts thinking ahead to spring may want to plan to take a boater safety class.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department will begin its 2008 boater safety class program next month.

The one-day classes will be offered March 8, April 12, May 10, June 14, and July 12 at the sheriff's office, 100 East Second St.

The classes, which begin at 9 a.m. and run until 3 p.m., are free and there is no pre-registration. Participants must be at least 12 years old and are asked to bring a sack lunch and number 2 pencil.

Anyone who successfully completes the boater safety course approved by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and passes a test will be certified to operate a boat or personal water craft in the state.

All out-of-state residents who want to operate a personal watercraft in Michigan waters must pass an authorized safety course.
