Adrian senior wins sportsmanship award; Northview grad places
5/14/2008Adrian High School graduate Lindsey Eshelman, a senior at Adrian College, won the Sue Little Sportsmanship Award.
The coaches in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association singled Eshelman out as the player who best exemplifies courtesy and sportsmanship both on and off the court.
Eshelman posted a 10-9 record while playing No. 1 and No. 2 singles this season. She also went 10-9 in No. 1 doubles.
Eshelman also earned second team all-MIAA mention while playing volleyball for the Bulldogs in the fall.
GOLF: Northview High School graduate Chase Yacko placed fourth at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship tournament on May 3 in Wheaton, Ill.
Yacko is a freshman on the Wheaton College golf team. Yacko shot 74-75-77-74-300 to take fourth while leading Wheaton to a second-place team finish.
Yacko's 74 was the low round for the final day in the Division III tournament. Yacko won a district title in his senior year at Northview.
St. John's Jesuit High School graduate Reed Welker set a record at Saginaw Valley State University for home runs in a single season.
Welker smacked his 14th home run of the season on May 3. He helped the Cardinals sweep Rochester College in a doubleheader (11-1 and 15-4).
Welker hit two homers and was 4-for-4 in the second game. He tied the record in his first at-bat with a shot to left-center field. He then tallied a single and double in his next two at-bats before breaking the home-run record another shot to left-center.
The senior outfielder also has a shot at breaking two other Saginaw Valley records. He is two shy of the single-season record for doubles, and needs just two more runs batted in to establish a new season RBI mark.
Welker also moved into a tie for fifth place all-time at SVSU with 21 career home runs. He is fourth in career doubles (47) and eighth in career hits (185).
Welker, who was named first team all-City and all-district as a senior at St. John's, helped lead the Cardinals to a 31-13 regular season record.
SOFTBALL: Kellie Kenney (Emmanuel Christian School) was a force as a pitcher and third baseman for Bluffton University this season.
Kenney played in all 42 games for the Beavers. She batted .327 and tied for the team lead with 12 doubles. She also drove in 24 runs and drew a club-high 23 walks.
Kenney posted a 12-4 record with a 2.91 earned run average for BU. She struck out 58 batters and opponents had just a .261 batting average against her.
Kenney came on and held Defiance scoreless over the final 31/3 innings in a 4-1 season-ending loss on May 2.
The Beavers were co-champions of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference finishing the season with a 13-3 record. Bluffton wrapped up its 2008 season with a 25-17 record.
SOFTBALL: Mandi Fought (Whitmer High School) earned first team All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors this spring.
Fought, a sophomore center fielder for Ohio Northern University, captured the honor for the second straight season.
Fought set ONU's single-season and career stolen-base records this year. She stole 33 bases in 38 attempts for a career total of 55. Fought hit .410 with three home runs, 30 RBI, and 49 runs scored.
Fought started all 41 games for the Polar Bears, who finished with a 28-13 record and 14-4 mark in the OAC.
Fought is ranked sixth all-time at ONU with 99 runs scored and is fifth with 11 triples.
SOFTBALL: Angie Westenkirchner (Maumee High School) has a .297 batting average in 26 games for Ashland University.
Westenkirchner has two doubles and eight runs batted in for the Warriors. The senior first baseman has not committed an error this season.
Her teammate, Danielle Rychener, a senior second baseman from Archbold, has 14 RBI and has scored seven runs.
Ashland freshman shortstop Melissa Gorsuch (Whitmer) has scored 14 runs in 32 games.
TRACK AND FIELD: Bowsher High School graduate Anthony Thomas, a sophomore at Ohio Northern University, posted a season-best throw of 127 feet, 10 inches in the discus on May 3.
Thomas's throw was good for second place at the Joe Banks Invitational at ONU. Thomas also finished fifth in the javelin and sixth in the hammer throw to help the Polar Bears win the team title.
BASEBALL: Ohio Northern University pitcher Drew Wieland (Bryan High School) started the final game of his collegiate career on May 3.
Wieland, a senior, pitched 71/3 innings in to pick up the win over Marietta (12-7). He allowed four earned runs while striking out 10.
Wieland finished the season with a 5-5 record and a 3.35 ERA. He led the Ohio Athletic Conference by a wide margin in strikeouts with 81. That total was the most for a Polar Bear pitcher since 1995.
ONU finished with an 18-22 record and 9-9 mark in the OAC.
SOFTBALL: University of Findlay sophomore Katie Ammons, a Findlay High School graduate, was named first team all-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on May 1.
Ammons, an outfielder, led the Oilers in hitting (.357) and became the first Findlay player to be named first team all-conference since 2004.
Ammons also led the team in hits (40), runs (22), and stolen bases (11). Ammons also had one home run and 16 RBIs to go along with four doubles and two triples.
