    A luminaria stands in front of Trinity Lutheran Church in Monroe's Old Village Plat neighborhood during a recent event in which residents lit luminarias along the sidewalks to recognize the 12th night of the feast of the Epiphany. The Old Village Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 6, 1982. The area is commonly referred to as the downtown area and is the oldest settled area in Monroe, dating to 1817 when it was first platted. Some of the oldest surviving buildings in this district date to 1830.
