Bedford Township students get look at emergency vehicles

Bedford Township firefighter and EMT Phil Dale shows Engine 5 to students at the Bedford Public Schools Safety Vehicle Expo.

Dozens of emergency vehicles converged at Monroe Road Elementary in Lambertville on Friday, along with dozens of emergency vehicle operators and safety personnel.

There were no emergencies, though. The gathering was for the benefit of second and third-graders throughout Bedford schools.

The occasion was the Fourth Annual Bedford Public Schools Safety Vehicle Expo.

The Expo gave youngsters an up-close look at emergency vehicles and equipment in a safe setting.

Students had the opportunity to talk with the public safety professionals about careers in the fields they represent.

Among the emergency vehicles on hand were:

•A helicopter and four-wheel Argo vehicle from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

•A motorcycle from the Michigan State Police.

•A patrol vehicle, boat, and trailer from the Ohio Division of Watercraft.

•Patrol vehicles from the United States Border Patrol, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, University of Toledo police, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

•A patrol boat and trailer from the U.S. Coast Guard.

•A fire truck and rescue vehicle from the Bedford Township Fire Department.

•A medical helicopter from Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

•An ambulance from Monroe Community Ambulance.

•An emergency response trailer from Bedford Township Community Emergency Response Team.

The event was organized by Bedford's School Resource Officers-Monroe County deputy sheriffs Randy Sehl and Randy Krupp.

The Expo was made possible because of a grant that was provided by the Youth Advisory Council of the Bedford Community Foundation.

The grant paid for the transportation costs of busing students to and from Monroe Road and the other elementary schools.
