Frenchtown Twp. ice cream vendors may have to get license

10/19/2010

Ice cream vendors in Frenchtown Township will have to be licensed if a proposal under consideration by the township board becomes law.

The board last week gave a first reading to a proposed ordinance that would require a vendor selling ice cream to obtain a $25 license.

The proposed law would require the applicant to carry $500,000 in liability insurance. The township also would require a $500 cash bond if the applicant is not a resident of Monroe County.

Supervisor Jim McDevitt said the proposal is an update of the township's ordinance regulating peddlers and solicitors that has not included ice cream vendors.

"It's something the board has been meaning to do to give more protection to the residents," he said.

In other action, the board rehired Merry Garrett as the instructor for the township's self-defense course, which offers karate instruction in Kiwanis Park Hall on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Ms. Garrett will be paid $17 per hour. The cost of each course is $50. For more information, Ms. Garrett can be reached at 734-289-2447.

The board scheduled a public hearing for the 2011 budget at 7 p.m. Oct. 26.
