Park's muskrat mascot debuts at heritage trail event

MONROE -- Major Muskrat, the River Raisin National Battlefield Park's new mascot, will be on paw, er, on hand during a special event during which participants can blaze the River Raisin Heritage Trail from America's newest national battlefield park to the William C. Sterling State Park on Lake Erie.

The event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, starts at the River Raisin National Battlefield Park Visitor Center, 1403 East Elm Ave..

The first 1,000 hikers who participate in the inaugural march along the trail will get free, multifunction pedometers and the first 1,000 cyclists will be get free water bottles.

Mercy Memorial Hospital System will be on site to provide free fitness screening, or, as organizers put it, to see if you're fit for the Major Muskrat Militia.

The National Park Service in partnership with other groups will launch two programs, the River Raisin VISA Program and Kentucky March Activity.
