Wednesday is a critical day for Michigan school districts. That's the first count day of the 2012-13 school year, when all public schools in the state tally the number of students attending their schools.

Bobb Vergiels, spokesman for Monroe Public Schools, said the financial implications of student attendance that day are important because each student translates into state funding for the district they attend.

He said parents are encouraged to make sure their children are in school that day.

"In these days of tight economic times, count information is critical to all state public schools districts, including Monroe Public Schools," he said in a statement.

Michigan schools have two count days each year. The fall count represents 90 percent of state funding. The second count day, on the second Wednesday in February, represents 10 percent.
