About 6,600 utility customers lost electricity Wednesday after a downed power line caused an outage in North Toledo. It also affected traffic on the Maumee River by the Oregon-Toledo line after the line fell into the river, authorities said.

A Toledo Edison spokesman said the customers, mainly in Point Place, lost power about 5:25 a.m. It was restored by 8:14 a.m.

A Coast Guard vessel patrolled the Maumee River near the CSX railroad bridge through the afternoon, keeping vessels away from the area where the downed power line fell, a guard dispatcher said. The river remained open to through traffic but the CSX bridge was kept in the lowered position through the morning and the afternoon, preventing larger ships from passing through, he said.

Utility company spokesman Meg Adams said the downed power line was caused by equipment failure of maintenance crews.
