Buford named player of the week

COLUMBUS - Ohio State freshman William Buford was named the Big Ten player of the week yesterday after leading the Buckeyes to victories last week over Indiana and at No. 25 Michigan.

In the two wins, Buford averaged 17 points, six rebounds and went 13-of-25 (.520) from the field. The Libbey graduate also recorded four assists and two steals while averaging 36.5 minutes per game.

In Tuesday's game against the Hoosiers, Buford tied a career high with 19 points, hitting 4-of-7 (.571) from 3-point range, marking the third consecutive game that he either has set or tied his career high in scoring.

Against Michigan on Saturday night, Buford reached double figures for the eighth time in his last nine outings with 15 points.

For the week, Buford went 5-of-11 (.455) from 3-point range and 3-of-4 (.750) from the free throw line.

PITTSBURGH - Sam Young pulled out of a three-game slump by scoring 19 of his 22 points in the second half to help Pittsburgh win.

DeJuan Blair had 20 points and 12 rebounds.
