Wukie falls in individual archery competition

Jacob Wukie won a silver medal Saturday in the team competition.

LONDON -- Oak Harbor's Jacob Wukie was eliminated from individual archery competition at the Olympics, falling to a Norway's Baard Nesteng on Tuesday at Lord's Cricket Ground.

His bid to win another medal at the London Games, this after securing silver on Saturday in the team competition, came to a halt in the round of 32 when Wukie ran into a red-hot opponent.

After the 12th-seed Wukie took the first set, 28-24, Nesteng scored 29 of a possible 30 points in each of the final three sets to advance, 6-2.

Wukie's scores in the final two sets were: 28, 27, 26.

He nailed the bull's-eye a total of six times in the match and was defeated in total points by Nesteng 111-109.

Nesteng will face Japan's Takaharu Furukawa on Friday in the round of 16.

Wukie opened the day with a 6-0 win over India's Jayanta Talukdar in the round of 64. Wukie, a 2004 Fremont Ross graduate, scored 86 of a possible 90 points and shot five straight 10s which included a perfect second set.

Wukie won the rounds 27-22, 30-26, and 29-28 while gaining 86 totals points compared to Talukdar's 76.

Wukie's American teammates will be in action today as the second half of the elimination rounds begin before Friday's quarterfinals, semifinals, and medal matches all take place.

Tenth-seed Brady Ellison, the top ranked bowman in the world entering the Games, takes on Mark Javier of the Philippines in the round of 64.

Jake Kaminski, the 18th seed, will oppose Dan Olaru of Moldova.
