Hole-in-one no big deal to visitors
12/2/2000At Fire Ridge Golf Course near Millersburg, O., Betty Lou Miller of Northwood shot a hole-in-one.
Among watchers were visitors from Switzerland, here for the 50th anniversary of Marjorie and Ernest Bollinger of Oregon.
“We were all hooting and hollering,” Marjorie said, “but the Swiss folks did not understand why we were excited. Not many people in Switzerland play golf.”
She said their comment was: “Isn't that what you're supposed to do, put the ball in the hole?”
As usual, the first donation for the Old Newsboys Christmas-time charity campaign came from Ebenezer Scrooge.
The $25 check, written in Mr. Scrooge's shaky hand, came to the “Old Newsboys Assn., c/o The Toledo Blade.” The check is written on the long-closed People's Savings but always goes through.
Next Friday, everyone has a chance to buy a Goodfellows Blade and help needy families.
Speaking of long-time workers for Toledo's No. 1 charity, Harry Fink is on the job as always.
Harry knows about collecting. He lost his parents when he was 13, he told me, and, as a boy, sold papers downtown by the Edison Building. He's been on the Boys and Girls Club board since 1937.
An attorney, Harry is nearly 90 but just retired this year. He has sent out his usual flood of letters on behalf of the Newsies.
Harry collects more than $3,000 every year. “I got my regular customers,” he says.

Marilyn Holloway of Deshler has a Thanksgiving Day memory of a prayer written by grandson Aaron George, a second-grader.
Aaron's final line was “We pray for the sailors in Maine.”
“We got a chuckle, knowing he meant the `Pilgrims in Massachusetts,'” Marilyn said.
Following surgery, Bob Snyder of Toledo, ex-pro football player and coach and world-class storyteller, is recovering.
On Monday, all proceeds at Dave's Home-Cooked Foods on South Reynolds Road will go to defray Bob's medical expenses, thanks to Dave and Betty Rubel, the eatery's owners.
Once again, 8,000 mice at work and play are displayed at the 4611 Overland Pkwy Toledo home of Bobbi and Art Beagle. They welcome visitors from 2 to 6 p.m. today, tomorrow, and Dec. 9 and 10.
Bob Byrne of Toledo salutes his sister, Rita Lewandowski of Holland, who has been disabled since age 14 but used crutches and wheelchair to work 48 years for the Toledo Electrical Welfare Union before retiring recently.
