2 local festivals highlight food

The International Festival will be held 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 16 and noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo at 25877 Scheider Rd. in Perrysburg. The International Food Court will include foods from India, Pakistan, Lebanon, Egypt, Malaysia, Syria, Afghanistan, and the United States.

Among the foods, watch for chicken tandoori and kabobs from India; Egyptian casserole of elbow noodles, rice, lentils, and garlic, and the Afghan dish kabouli made with rice, raisins, nuts, carrots, and onions. Ice creams from different countries will also be featured.

SATURDAY

1 p.m. - Indian samosas

3 p.m. - Lebanese flat bread

5 p.m. - Lebanese grape leaves

7 p.m. - Egyptian pastry

SUNDAY

1 p.m. - Pakistani vegetable fritters

3 p.m. - Lebanese flat bread

5 p.m. - Egyptian fried kibbee

An International Coffee House, an antique car show, bazaars, and rides for children will be featured. Tours of the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo will be going on throughout the day.

The 29th Annual Birmingham Ethnic Festival will be held at noon until 9 p.m. Aug. 17 on Consaul Street in East Toledo's Birmingham neighborhood.

St. Stephen Church will serve Hungarian food buffet-style from noon to 5 p.m. in the school gym. The menu includes chicken, dumplings, pigs in the blanket, coleslaw, and bread and butter for $8.50 (no advance ticket sales). Kolbasz (sausage) sandwiches and individual pigs in the blanket will be available in the school hall. A Hungarian pastry booth will also be in the hall.

Calvin United Church of Christ will serve chicken paprikash dinners in the church basement and pigs in the blanket, Hungarian dumplings, and kolbasz sandwiches in tents on the parking lot. Nut and poppyseed rolls and homemade noodles will be sold.

The Hungarian Club of Toledo will serve chicken paprikash and noodles, stuffed cabbage, and bacon bread in St. Stephen's parking lot.

Other food vendors will be selling an assortment of foods.

COOKING CLASSES

The Loretta Paganini School of Cooking has joined forces with three wineries in the Port Clinton/Sandusky area and opened a school extension at Mon Ami Historic Restaurant and Winery in Port Clinton. Classes are conducted in a state-of-the-art facility built for the school. Many classes will feature local Lake Erie “catch of the day.” Among the upcoming classes: Perfect Match from Italy, “Enoteca” Cooking with Wine at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 16; A Day in the Kitchen with Loretta at 11 a.m. Aug. 17, and Olives and Olive Oil Tasting Workshop at 11 a.m. Aug. 30. Veggie U at The Culinary Vegetable Institute in Milan, Ohio, has a line-up of summer classes, including Exploring Melons from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 18, and Exploring Heirloom Tomatoes, 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 15. Cooking with Farmer Jones for children ages 7 to 12 and their parent will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 22 (fee for one child and one parent is $85 for members and $95 for nonmembers). Fall Mushroom Mania weekends have been announced at Springbrook Hills in northern Michigan. Outings are set for Aug. 22-24, Sept. 12-14, and Sept. 26-28.
